When my son was having a hard time in US history and couldn't process it all because it all seemed to boring, someone mentioned this book to me, so I thought I'd give it a try.It worked. The cartoons made the information funny or intriguing, so all of it was more memorable. He ended up with an A- in the class which was a lot better than the C he started the semester with.I'm not saying this will immediately solve your problems, but for us it was a good solution.I bought it used and it help up well. Now it's on our keep shelf just in case any of our younger kids run into the same type of problems.
A great way to get your children interested in the history of the United States. My son, age 10, enjoyed this book immensely and has carried his knowledge forward as he explores more areas of geography, government and US history. Definitely a fun read!
The comics are written in the style of political cartoons. I found the story easy to follow and learned somethings about our government system that I didn't remember from high school. A great gift for the history teacher or history fan in your life.
Great, like all of Gonick's book: you learn serious material in a fun way. I know a lot of history, but I learn new things from his books. Check out the others too!
Larry Gonick did it again. He wrote a book that is informative, fun to read, and provides a few laughs. From the science-based books I have where he is a coauthor, I thought he was only a cartoonist/illustrator. But this brief history book certainly shows that he is multi-talented. I was amazed by how much information he packed in this small volume; and it is quite accurate. It takes great talent to do this. Good political cartoonists do this. Occam's razor is at work here! I plan to read some of the other non-science books that he personally authored.
Good, easy to understand illustrations to help you understand American History. I got this book at the suggestion of my professor and use it in conjunction with our textbook.
Fun book
My son is taking American History in school, so I purchased this book as a compliment to his text book. Text books are great, but teenage boys retain things much better when you can make them laugh in the process of learning. The book has definitely improved his information retention, and he likes it so much that he has requested other volumes in the Cartoon Guide series. I call that a ringing endorsement.
