Review

“Photography on the Color Line should be widely read and widely taught. In this outstanding book, Shawn Michelle Smith has offered not only a spirited reading of a historically important group of photographs but also a methodology and theoretical grounding that are widely applicable even beyond the specific archive of the Du Bois photographs.”—Laura Wexler, author of Tender Violence: Domestic Visions in an Age of U.S. Imperialism“Photography on the Color Line is both a complicated and fascinating read on race, human displays at expositions, and Du Bois’s notion of double consciousness. It is groundbreaking work on the Du Boisian concept of life on the color line.”—Deborah Willis, coauthor of A Small Nation of People: W. E. B. Du Bois and African American Portraits of Progress

This book is about the photographs taken of middle class black people. These photographs were shown at the 1900 Paris Exposition, at the American Negro Exhibit. They are still interesting today, because they show how black people looked and dressed in that era. Also of interest were photographs of blacks who looked more white than black, including a black albino person. I already knew about blacks being raped by whites during slavery, which would render their off-spring mulatto... or looking totally white. I haven't seen many photographs of them though. All of the photographs in this book are superb in quality. I found the text about these photographs to be very informative as well.

Great old-time, Victorian-age photos of Black people in their splendor. Why aren't these images more widely known?

If you are interested in the history of photography and also in African American photographers impact in history this is the book for you. Highly recommend.

The book has 2 very contrasting parts. The first is an analysis of Du Bois' collection of Georgia Negro photographs, that he exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Several hundred photos. Mostly of middle class American Negroes, well dressed and well posed for the photographer. (Who was not actually Du Bois himself.) The photos tended to show people born after the end of the Civil War and slavery. In that Paris Exposition, Du Bois' offering was a deliberate contrast to the other depictions of Africans, which came from the European empires in Africa. These invariably showed tribal Africans. Backward and ignorant. This was the ideological or racial justification for the White Man's Burden of imperialism. What Du Bois depicted were educated Americans, as an eloquent counterpoint. Here were people of African descent, but otherwise indistinguishable from white middle class Americans or Europeans.Another fillip was the inclusion of light skinned Negroes by Du Bois. As a rejoinder to a strict racial and racist separation promulgated by some whites. In one example, there is a photo of a girl who looked more southern European (think Spaniard or Italian perhaps) than African. Yet to the white mainstream, she would have been irrevocably classified as Negro. The second half of the book studies the lynching photos. Taken by whites at lynchings throughout the American South. Here, Smith takes particulars never to show the grotesqueries of the victims. (Other books adequately do this.) Instead, there is an incisive analysis of the white spectators and participants. We see them preening and guiltless. Many of the photos were in fact used as postcards, sent by the participants to others. While the white ideology of those times depicted Negroes as savages, the book asks, who were the actual savages?

Purchased as a Christmas gift for a cousin, she cannot put it down. Some of the photo matches the ones in her collection. Amazing,

#9,418 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

A great read.....while an infantry soldier in Vietnam, I often envied the helicopter pilots with their cold beer and clean??? sheets. My outlook changed while convalescing at Brooke Army Medical Center after being wounded. Most of my burn ward fellow patients were chopper pilots, and the horror of their experiences stays with me today. There is no braver group of people than Vietnam chopper pilots...Mark hits the mark with his "young, dumb. and fearless" description. They always gave us (Infantry) their best, and their actions will never be forgotten as long as Vietnam Infantry soldiers are still around. As a disclaimer, although I haven't seen him since, I attended grade school and high school with Mark, and was one of the many from that group that ended up in Vietnam. I was commissioned as an Infantry Officer a couple of weeks after Mark was discharged, and started my tour in Vietnam in 1971. The war that kept on giving......! If you have any interest in the Vietnam War from the viewpoint of a combat helicopter pilot, buy this book: it's the real deal!!!

As a former Huey pilot in Vietnam (1966-67), I wanted to see what memories another chopper pilot retained after all those years. There have been other books written by former pilots of the Vietnam War and too many of them reflect rather large egos and exaggerated stories. Our stories seem to vary a good deal but it depends on what unit you were in. I flew slicks for the 1st Air Cav and we had our fair share of combat. Our living conditions were primitive with no hooches, hooch maids or officers clubs. Rather, we lived in tents, slept on bunks made from ammo boxes and had the privilege of outhouses (while the grunts slept on the ground and the great outdoors was their outhouse). We were a united brotherhood and that's the common ground of most pilots' stories. If you were a pilot, you will find technical mistakes and stories that there are a bit contrived but that is not to criticize this book. The Huey pilots (slicks or guns) saw the war mostly from above but on the ground (briefly) as we inserted and retrieved our grunts. The gunship drivers were a different breed, taking on any challenge in the face of certain fire. If you want to learn about the war from a gun pilot's perspective, I would recommend this book.

Having served in the same unit a year before Mark's tour of duty, it was a great way to reflect back and recall some similar stories of places and events that happened a half century ago. "Guts N' Gunships" is something that every Army helicopter pilot who flew in Vietnam can identify; the fears of going into the heart of the air war battle, the humor of pilots necessary to maintain their sanity, the sadness of losing close friends and brothers of war, and the day-to-day courage that it took to be a part of the "Helicopter War."This is a book that will not only be enjoyed by helicopter pilots, but also by the troops who served in the jungles and rice patties and to the families of these brave young men.

The author presents a point of view from the air that I can appreciate in that we were often the happy campers that these crazy bastards supported. He details the early training and the blossoming of skills that saved his tail and that of many others, in the air and on the ground. His deduction that the politicians were incompetent is accurate, and that the only genuine objective that most felt was to get as many Americans home...alive. One major shortcoming is that his personnel focus was centered on other pilots; the enlisted crew members seemed to be there but no focus of their actions, except in rare instances, and for some reason he did not cite them by name as he did the pilots. I can not understand the oversight of omitting them, because one is virtually nothing except for the efforts of your men. However, perhaps I have misread. He omits much of the drama of inserts and recoveries; each one could be expanded, but one can suppose that if you perform so many, they mingle into a steady stream of....boredom?? These airmen performed beyond human endurance, their courage rates up there with any single classical battle from Gettysburg to Guadalcanal to Pelilue to Iwo Jima to Normandy to Okinawa to the Battle of the Bulge.....and they did it month after month for 12 months. I have a brother-in-law, U.S. Air Force veteran, chopper crew chief out of Thailand and Vietnam 1966-1968 who is suffering mightily from PTSD to this day; I don't dare to send him a copy of this book, but I will send it to his two daughters so that they can better understand what a magnificent service he and others like him performed, because he would never tell them, especially about how he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross.Capt W. J. Clifford, USMC (Ret)VN Jul 1967- Aug 1968

Often, I've wondered what it was really like in Vietnam. Guts 'N Gunships fills a long-time communication gap about what the Vietnam Veterans endured for the rest of us Americans safe here at home. Mark has a way of introducing humor into otherwise serious situations. At the end of most chapters, I felt compelled to read more His descriptions made me feel as if I was sitting right next to him in that cockpit. What an adrenaline rush!! I never laughed so many belly laughs or had a need for so many kleenex in any book I've ever read, and that's a lot. Thank you Mark (Pigpen), for your courageous service in Vietnam and your lifetime of recovery. We're privileged to have you home!

The Book on the Bookshelf

Amazon.com Review

Consider the book. Though Goodnight Moon and Finnegans Wake differ considerably in content and intended audience, they do share some basic characteristics. They have pages, they're roughly the same shape, and whether in a bookstore, library, or private home, they are generally stored vertically on shelves. Indeed, this is so much the norm that in these days of high-tech printing presses and chain bookstores, it's easy to believe that the book, like the cockroach, remains much the same as it ever was. But as Henry Petroski makes abundantly clear in Book on the Bookshelf, books as we know them have had a long and complex evolution. Indeed, he takes us from the scroll to the codex to the hand-lettered illuminated texts that were so rare and valuable they were chained to lecterns to prevent theft. Along the way he provides plenty of amusing anecdotes about libraries (according to one possibly apocryphal account, the library at Alexandria borrowed the works of the great Greek authors from Athens, had them copied, and then sent the copies back, keeping the originals), book collectors, and the care of books. Book-lover though he may be, however, Henry Petroski is, first and foremost, an engineer and so, in the end, it is the evolution of bookshelves even more than of books that fascinates him. Pigeonholes for scrolls, book presses containing thousands of chained volumes, rotating lecterns that allowed scholars to peruse more than one book at a time--these are just a few of the ingenious methods readers have devised over the centuries for storing their books: "in cabinets beneath the desks, on shelves in front of them, in triangular attic-like spaces formed under the back-to-back sloped surfaces of desktops or small tabletop lecterns that rested upon a horizontal surface." Placing books vertically on shelves, spines facing outward, is a fairly recent invention, it would seem. Well written as it is, if Book on the Bookshelf were only about books-as-furniture, it would have little appeal to the general reader. Petroski, however, uses this treatise on design to examine the very human motivations that lie behind it. From the example of Samuel Pepys, who refused to have more titles than his library could hold (about 3,000), to an appendix detailing all the ways people organize their collections (by sentimental value, by size, by color, and by price, to name a few of the more unconventional methods), Petroski peppers his account with enough human interest to keep his audience reading from cover to cover. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly

That bookshelves might harbor secret and enchanting lives is a thrilling prospect for any serious reader. What laws of human nature govern our sturdy cases of books? What damning quirks of character glare from a few casually stowed volumes? In this disappointing study, however, Petroski's effort to reveal the "evolution of the bookshelf as we know it" yields few rewards. Pondering the physics of the bookend and the genealogy of the library carrel, this Duke University scholar observes the bookshelf as a piece of the infrastructure undergirding our civilization. We learn that medieval books were chained to their shelves to prevent theft, and that beverage stains have plagued bibliophiles almost since the dawn of the printed word. Admirers of Petroski's earlier works (The Evolution of Useful Things, Remaking the World, etc.) will not be surprised by his exquisite research, or by the gusto with which he plunges into the dustiest of library bins. But the bookshelf proves a more oblique topic than bridges or even pencils, two of Petroski's other interests. The practical construction principles of bookshelves make for rather dull reading, and conjecture about lectern usage in the Middle Ages wears thin. This book is most successful when delving into the gritty aspects of engineering, whether it be the cantilevered forces of library book stacks or the architecture of the British Museum Reading Room. After lingering among such fusty stacks, readers will welcome the whimsical appendix, which proposes arranging one's books alphabetically by the author's first name, or even by the first word of the antepenultimate sentence. It's a good book. I've designed a number of complex built-in bookcases, own a sizeable hone library with aspirations, and this book fits in nicely among other books about the history of books and libraries while covering some new ground. One thing I didn't quite get is the introduction where he talks about a friend of his but doesn't say who it is--is he being silly or did the person not want to be named? I just couldn't decide but he makes it pretty clear who the person is.Anyway if you're interested in this topic, it's worth the time and space on the shelf.

I'm a book collector and reader, and had always taken the shelves on which they stand for grated. This interesting book tells me how my bookshelves got the way they are and perhaps what the future will bring. Ironically, I read this on my iPad so it doesn't need a space on a shelf, but I generally prefer the tactile look, feel and smell of a bound book, so shelves and their history will remain in my house.

Who thinks of bookshelves? No one, unless you need to shelve some books, and even then it seems `pretty obvious'. Well, think again. Henry Petroski, a professor of both Civil Engineering and History at Duke University, has written an amazing study of the booksehelf.Did you know that for much of history, books were shelved spine in, instead of spine outwards? Did you know that many libraries have tall, slender widows-for a reason? Did you know that some libraries, the buildings themselves, are held up by their bookshelves?Did you know that libraries are built much stronger than most buildings, because the weight of the books would destroy `normal' buildings? One of the reason the Pentagon survived the 9/11 crash so well was that is was designed to be a library/records retention facility, instead of an office building. This and other interesting information can be found in "The Book on the Bookshelf". Much of the information is not well known, even by librarians. For example, in Clearwater, Florida, they had to remove most of their books from the main library a few years ago when a visitor (a civil engineer) noticed that they had converted a department store to a library. He calculated that the weight of the books on the upper floors should have collapsed the building. They investigated and found large cracks! They quickly removed most of the books, and set about designing a new library. After reading this volume, you will never look at a library, bookshelf, or even a book the same way again. I have read this book several times, and find new meaning and information each time. Probably his best work. Highly recommended.

We tend not to think about things like the bookshelf. It's history and function. And the book on it. Weren't books always shelved the way they are now? Spine out, on a horizontal shelf next to others placed vertically?Well, no. Petroski takes the reader on a an adventure through the reading history of the West, explaining the birth of books and what they were set upon. Numerous illustrations take us from the codex to the chained book to the printed book. From horizontal stacking to front cover out to spine in to spine out.Truly an intriguing romp for bibliophiles and historians. A must for anybody in library science. Well-cited, though with that new style of endnotes that makes me gag. A bib and index, along with an appendix on shelving systems. An endlessly diverting book.

I enjoy this book so much that I bought this to replace the one I thought I lost, then found the first one again

A historical trip through the development of how books have been kept over the ages. It could be dry for those who don't really love books, but fascinating for those of us who do. His other books are equally interesting.

Another excellent addition to my collection of Books about Books!

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

#434,559 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Very difficult to read in some chapters. Amazon should definitely had an English speaker re-translate the text into correct English. The book is full of grammatical errors which is what made the reading difficult. Other than that the book seems to cover the subject.

A good beginners guide. It has good step by step instructions. Very basic, many grammatical and spelling errors. There seems to be a lot of redundancy regarding topics. Overall good information.
