Read it to the kids, 1-2 chapters a night. We got through the book quickly, but the kids asked many questions. What a fantastic book, this specific edition didn't have any of the updates, which was exactly what i was after. I don't want a PC twist, or version that is "sensitive" to this generation. Leave the story alone in its original format, offensive or otherwise. It was a great book, a great read.

Something is missing, and I can't exactly figure out what. Perhaps I need to revisit the Soviet rip-off/homage to the series, which I read as a kid, and which was a deeper, darker and more nuanced exploration of the same storyline, and absolutely independent sequels. I guess it's because of this unshakeable comparison that I found the storyline in the regular Oz a little flat: the girl is bored in a desolate landscape, and travels to a queer wonderland. But, and I can't stop thinking of L. Frank Baum's job as a store window designer: this is what this book reminds me of, a masterful stylization on the theme that begs for a deeper, more thorough exploration. Which, I suppose, is a source of genius of its own accord. Also, I really hate the person who told me about the gold standard subtheme, because it was really annoying to think about it all the time and never see it pay off in a satisfying way.

I purchased this book because it had all the original Denslow illustrations. And while it delivers on that, the quality of the printing, formatting, and layout is poor.

Books just do so much more for the imagination than the movie counterpart could ever do. Anyone who grew up watching the film, which is practically everyone, should certainly do yourself the favor of reading this book and learning for yourself why books are often made into big production movies. And here, again, find out for yourself why the book is always so much more enjoyable for those who love to read. Judy Garland and company did a fine job bring the main characters to life. But nothing tops the wild imagination stirred in the reader by turning the pages for himself. Don't pass up this classic. Don't tell yourself it's a children's story either. Be a child again. There's nothing to stop you. Not even flying monkeys.

I used to wait for this cartoon every week and had recorded all episodes over tape. Have been looking for this since my VCR broke down in 1998! This blue ray contains all the original 52 episodes in stereo. Also I don't see any interlace artifacts in the main content, it's only single visible in some of the intros and is hardly noticeable when viewed on the 120 Hz adaptive motion plus Samsung LCD.. Before this blue ray I've never been able to find this show except on jaroo.com which had long since closed down. Someone out there still cared to put this classic show in digital. My 5 and 7 year old also love this and can't get enough..

Beautiful (albeit very BIG) box set! I never realized there were 15 some-odd books in the entire Oz series, fun surprise that & I'm immensely looking forward to starting the series once my reading list clears up a little (I'm one of those crazies who often reads multiple books at once). I've heard some complaints about the box the books come in being very battered looking, however, I haven't had that problem. I'm sure as time goes on I'll have to tape it up to help it avoid wear & tear, but I have not grumbles about the packaging. I grew up reading part of the Oz series when I was much younger & have wanted to find a non-Omnibus set for a while (omnibus being the great big books that combine several books into one). The cover art is very cute for its young audience.

My daughter and I read this together and really liked it. I found the sentences to be a bit run on so when I was reading it out loud to my daughter I kept having to pause in the middle to catch my breath! That was a bit annoying. But the story itself was pretty funny and a bit morbid IMO. If you have watched the movie but not read the book, lemme tell you; they are similar but by no means are they the same. The tin man’s reason for being tin was…..bordering on the ridiculous. My daughter and I kept laughing at each time he lost a limb. And the Lion didn’t really come off as cowardly so much as bratty. But I’m sure that’s just our modern interpretation. I did love the flying monkeys. They played a much bigger part in the book. Each chapter was like a mini adventure, always something new that happened and was resolved by the end of it. It kept us engaged in that aspect. One thing I will spoil for you….her shoes are NOT red.And did you know, there’s like 13 books in this series? I had no idea. Anyway, it was a fun read. I definitely recommend it, especially if you had kids.

I introduced my 2 year old granddaughter to the original "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with Judy Garland via good 'ole youtube. She loves, loves, loves that. And, also "We're off the See the Wizard". So, she was familiar with most of the wonderful characters and story (with the exception of the Wicked Witch of the West and the flying monkeys). I was happy to find this amazing book. The most challenging thing is to keep all the intricate pop-ups safe from her curious little hands. One tip I would offer is to turn the pages carefully! The story is a little long for her to sit through right now, but my abbreviated version as we turn the pages keeps her interest. I'm in hopes that it will only get better as she ages. I would recommend this engaging book - especially the "magic" Emerald City glasses !

Greg Giraldo's fascinating life and incredibly unique perspectives are captured with great writing. As a fan of comedy and someone who grew up watching Greg on the Comedy Central Roasts blend intellectual comedy with crassness in the perfect smoothie of hilarity, this was the book I needed. This is a must read for fans of comedy.

Greg found the humor and compassion in his life and society while dealing with his own troubles and demons. The authors have captured that compassion and the reader cannot help but share in the love that Greg's comedy inspired in others.

Wilson, Sr., business management professional, and editor/blogger at Command Performance Leadership (commandperformanceleadership.wordpress.com) This is the story of Captain David Marquet's unprecedented experiment in the most rigid of environments on the Santa Fe, a U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarine. He had the courage to operate counter-culture, reengineering the very definition of leadership accepted by the U.S. Navy for as long as it has existed. He took huge risk to do this. The outcome was revolutionary - within a few short months, the crew of the Santa Fe went from worst to first. In today's information age, Human Capital is our most precious resource. It is the 21stCentury weapon of choice. Captain David Marquet's experiment in leadership has far greater application to the entire business world. The values that he imbued in his folks provided a 'burst of energy' that positively energized them by satisfying their needs for achievement, providing appropriate recognition, providing a sense of belonging, developing self-esteem, permitting a feeling of control, and permitting an ability to live up to appropriate standards. This type of leadership energizes the work force and allows senior management to 'paint the future and light a path that takes the entire team to it.' This is a must read for all who desire good moral influence on the work force! -- Vice Admiral Al Konetzni, (USN, ret.) Former Pacific Fleet submarine commander. The legacy of a Commanding Officer, or the leader of any organization, is how well the organization performs after he/she departs and the subsequent motivation, success and institutional contribution of those next generation leaders trained and developed. Read Turn the Ship Around! and you will learn how to build an enduring high performer, where people can't wait to get to work. -- Admiral Thomas B. Fargo (USN, ret.) Former Commander U.S. Pacific Command Chairman, Huntington Ingalls Industries What I learned from and with David Marquet is that developing a bottom-up, Leader-Leader culture produces highly empowered people and highly effective teams. It worked on a nuclear submarine and it worked in the mountains of Afghanistan. That said, cultivating a Leader-Leader culture is much easier said than done because you must overturn almost everything people grow up thinking and learning about leadership. -- Captain (sel) Dave Adams, USN, Former Weapons Officer, USS Santa Fe, Khost Province PRT commander, Commanding Officer, USS Santa Fe Captain Marquet's compelling leadership journey inspires each of us to imagine a world where every human being is intellectually engaged and fully committed to solving our toughest challenges. If it can be done on a nuclear submarine, it can be done everywhere. First, I am a 30 year U.S. Navy veteran. I want to say I'm lucky I was never involved in the part of the Navy bent on blind followership that David Marquet describes as the starting condition of the USS Santa Fe but I don't think it was luck. Don't get the wrong impression of the entire U.S. Navy based on his experience. There are elements of the Navy that operate just as Marquet describes though and I am impressed that he could codify the mechanisms and activities that turned his ship around. I had successful tour after successful tour of duty in the Navy using many, not all, of the techniques Santa Fe adopted in a short period with such dramatic results. I just did what seemed right to me but never took the time to codify what it was that made it right. This book really outlined and clarified what it was that made it work over and over for me. I truly appreciate the courage and the intelligence it takes to make such a drastic positive change. You may not have ever experienced life in military service but I can tell you that what Marquet describes here works in both military service and the private sector. Now that Marquet has taken the time to tell the story of what worked, how the mechanisms were developed and has published the recorded methods and results I feel I have a been given a compass to help guide me in the future. I've been a successful leader on highly successful teams for a long time and I see attaining even greater success in the future with this information. The book is written in easily understood language, using brilliant analogies and clear, concise prose that anyone can appreciate. Start on page 1 and read all the way through. I highly recommend the book and suggest learning and sharing widely.

I found this book fascinating in its challenge of the well established leadership model assumption. The eloquent dismantling of the leader-follower model is wonderful. The leader-leader model that replaces it is even better! I served in the submarine fleet more than 12 years after Mr. Marquet commanded his boat, but the effects of his success are still readily apparent. My fellow nukes don't need to be told why that is so impressive but let me elaborate for others. Our culture in the Nuclear Navy is so unique and forcefully strong it's hard for an outsider to understand. In short, the devotion to excellence is so severe we have operated hundreds of reactors over millions of nautical miles, for over 60 years without a single process safety accident. This culture of excellence is so ingrained and so strong that for anything to change it those changes would have to be unquestionably profound. Mr. Marquet provided exactly that. He put those things in his book and translates them well to business, but I assure you, the proof of their value is in the fact that the Nuclear Navy has incorporated his concepts, and become better for it.

I am skeptical about books on leadership. Most are written by persons who have reached positions of hierarchical authority in organizations and then anointed themselves "leaders." They don't talk about the political infighting and maneuvering that got them the job. Instead they wax eloquent about their skill in developing people - skills that frequently exist only in their imagination and the book they have written which book is often fiction parading as non-fiction. I was a contributing editor for one of the major business magazines and have met plenty of CEOs. I will leave it to you to guess how many times insiders have told me that the book their chief has written is wildly off the mark.I have not met any of the persons that David Marquet commanded, but I will lay a substantial wager that many will follow him wherever they can.Full disclosure: I am biased. I think that David is a leader, not a commander or a CEO or a senior officer but an authentic leader, for two reasons: 1) his views conform largely to my own, and 2) He undeniably moved a top of the line US nuclear submarine form bottom of the heap to the top by many objective measures.David's views on leadership, and I repeat I heartily endorse these, are:1) "Our greatest struggle is within ourselves. Whatever sense we have of thinking we know something is a barrier to continued learning."2) The way to build a great team is to push decision making down, way down. The more each person feels he has the ability to do what he needs to in his immediate working environment, the more he will "own" his job and the more engaged he will be.3) Engaged people will bubble with ideas about how to make the whole enterprise better. Some of these ideas will be relevant to a particular section and some for the entire organization. For the larger scope ideas, the originators will go out and get the cooperation/approval of others necessary to make the improvement happen.4) It is not enough to push the decision making way down. You also have to send down responsibility, authority and the requisite resources. If you do not do this simultaneously, you simply increase the frustration level. Would you invite some one to come and smell dinner but not eat it? Case closed.5) The mission is critically important. What is it, how is it defined and communicated, and is it a critical determinant of what decisions are made and how they are made? The answers to these questions will determine the success of the organization. There is much more but these give you the picture. There are wonderful anecdotes throughout the book. For example, Marquet relates an incident where he was denied the opportunity to sail with a submarine whose command he was to assume within a month. He just wanted to get a quick read on what he would soon be facing. The departing captain refused to take him for many reasons mostly unexplained. One explained reason was that Marquet would have taken up scarce sleeping space. What is interesting is the lesson Marquet draws from this incident and how it shapes his own future actions. I will quote directly from the book to illustrate this:"Even though this 2-day underway period would be greatly useful in sustaining Olympia's quality performance after he departed, he apparently had no interest in helping facilitate that. Could I fault him? In the navy system, captains are graded on how well their ships perform up to the day they depart, not a day longer. After that it becomes someone else's problem.I thought about that. On every submarine and ship, and in every squadron and battalion, hundreds of captains were making thousands of decisions to optimize the performance of their commands for their tour and their tour alone. If they did anything for the long run it was because of an enlightened sense of duty, not because there was anything in the system that rewarded them for it. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how well his unit performed after he left. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how often his people got promoted 2, 3 and 4 years hence. We didn't even track that kind of information. All that mattered was performance in the moment."To truly understand how valuable this type of thinking and approach is, ponder this question: If the "leaders" of our financial institutions knew that their bonuses were dependent on how the executive decisions they made would play out over the next five years, and those bonuses were subject to being recovered within that period, do you think we would still have had the blow-ups that wrecked so many venerable institutions and nearly destroyed our financial sector? There is one other reason I find this book invaluable. We all know that a good question is worth more than an hour of detailed instruction. Socrates certainly thought so. Each chapter has several profoundly thought provoking questions at the end. If you grapple with these questions, you may well find that your view of the world is being turned around. Here is a random example: "Are your people trying to achieve excellence or just avoid making mistakes?" Think about the implications of this for your organization.Get this book and read it with your highlighter in hand. Probably a good idea to get two highlighters.

Using a leader-follower model of leadership may have worked in the past when tasks were primarily physical, but a leader-leader approach is far more effective and resilient in a more cerebral and technical society. This is the story of how a Navy captain took command of a nuclear sub (the Santa Fe), whose crew was unempowered, uninspired, and performing poorly, and how that captain literally turned things around in short order by treating followers as leaders. This is a worthy read, but I caution that such personal stories have inherent biases and may not be generalizable to every organization. However, this is an excellent example of applying much less of a top-down, hero’s model and much more of a collaborative, coaching model to leadership practice. Risking such a paradigm shift for a military officer at the height of his career is ironically heroic. The book’s simple message: Control-Competence-Clarity. Push down (distribute) authority and control, ensure competence to execute, and communicate with clarity for consistency. Review

"Milk! A 10,000-Year Food Fracas is a feat of investigation, compilation and organization . . . Altogether a complex and rich survey, “Milk!” is a book well worth nursing." - Wall Street Journal"The sort of book that Proust might have written had Proust become distracted by the madeleine . . . you step away from this book with a new vantage on history, a working knowledge of exotic milk and cheese, acceptance of your mom, a sense of what makes Mark Kurlansky tick and a weird craving for buffalo mozzarella." - Editors' Choice, New York Times Book Review"[A] readable and almost unreasonably fascinating book." - The Times of London"Kurlansky’s entertaining, fast-paced history of milk exhibits his usual knack for plumbing the depths of a single subject . . . Kurlansky’s charming history brims with excellent stories and great details" - Publishers Weekly"Cod, salt, paper, oysters, 1968, and Havana―Kurlansky always picks a singular subject, then runs with it as he provides historical and cultural context. Here he examines our relationship to milk since the domestication of animals more than 10,000 years ago. That relationship shifted with the Industrial Revolution, which meant out with the family cow and in with pasteurization and, eventually, food fights over industrial farming, animal rights, and GMOs. Pour a glass and get out the cookies before reading." - Library Journal’s Nonfiction Picks, May 2018"The author of Salt (2002) and Cod (1997) tackles another staple food in this chatty history of milk andsome of the many products made from it . . . Kurlansky's wide-ranging curiosity makes a familiar topic seem exotic." - Booklist"A wide-ranging history of a surprisingly controversial form of nourishment . . . Chock-full of fascinating details." - Kirkus"A fascinating and comprehensive book that will keep readers engaged and entertained . . . Will appeal to both foodies and readers of world history." - Library Journal"Fascinating . . . Every chapter of Milk! entrances with I-did-not-know-that facts and observations." - BookPage"As with Mark Kurlansky’s Cod and Salt, I wish I had written Milk! Never would I have thought that so elementary a liquid food had such an intriguing history, one that includes science, politics, economics, and gourmandize. A great read on a great subject!" - Mimi Sheraton"Mark Kurlansky, the best-selling author of Cod and Salt, traces the 10,000-year-old cultural, economic, and culinary trajectory of this dietary staple, packing in dairy-centric recipes both ancient and modern." - Modern Farmer, "Seven of the Season's Best New Books""Calcium-heavy gold . . . the fine cream of the book rises to the top." - USA Today"A prolific and spirited explicator of the the world, Kurlansky has written on subjects as varied as 1968, Cuba, and European Jewry, but his sweet spot is literature on single forms of nutrition and sustenance, with books such as Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World and Salt: A World History. He now turns his attention to the mother of all subjects--milk--which he sees as the most argued-over food of the past 10,000 years. In this entertaining and constantly surprising book, he chronicles debates and disputes over milk (breast or bottle, pasteurized or homogenized, genetically modified or raw) and even finds that fierce disagreements over wet nurses involved not whether to use one, but whether brunettes or blondes were better." - The National Book Review, "Five Hot Books""Food historian Mark Kurlansky is famous for his deep dives on singular subjects, which range from salt to cod to oysters, and his latest work is everything one expects from this obsessive researcher. Milk! delves into the world’s most complex cultural, economic and culinary stories centered around milk, from Greek creation myths to modern pasteurization." - Smithsonian Magazine, 10 Best Books about Food of the Year"Something to enjoy with a cold class of (what else) milk and a warm cookie." - Popular Science"Rich and interesting, stocked full of recipes and facts. It’s an immensely rewarding reading experience." - BookRiot, 50 Must-Read Microhistories"Compelling." - The Columbus Dispatch"Best-selling author Mark Kurlansky follows up Cod (1997) and Salt (2002) with another zestful exploration of one foodstuff ― milk ― through history and a range of lenses . . . Kurlansky keeps up a cracking pace on a tour that covers classical geographer Strabo griping about the Celts’ milk consumption; the disease-generating dairies of nineteenth-century New York City; lactose intolerance in China; and 126 recipes for everything from ghee to syllabub." - Nature"From the first page of this book, you’ll be fascinated by how much milk, and its relatives like cheese, whey, and ice cream, have infiltrated our lives over thousands of years. If you’ve ever found yourself in a debate about what milk is the best milk--goat, cow, human?!--this book will equip you with all the random tidbits to strengthen your rebuttal." - Bon Appétit, "8 Non-Cookbook Food Books to Read This Summer""It may be a stretch to say that by understanding the history of milk that one can understand the history of the world, but maybe not that much of a stretch . . . As Kurlansky shows throughout Milk!, the story of dairy is really the story of civilization . . . What Milk! does particularly well is elucidate the history of conflict around all things milk." - Inside Higher Ed"Fascinating stuff . . . [Kurlansky] has a keen eye for odd facts and natural detail." - The Wall Street Journal on THE BIG OYSTER"Magnificent . . . a towering accomplishment." - Associated Press on THE BIG OYSTER"Every once in a while a writer of particular skill takes a fresh, seemingly improbable idea and turns out a book of pure delight. Such is the case of Mark Kurlansky and the codfish." - David McCullough on COD"Kurlansky finds the world in a grain of salt." - The New York Times Book Review on SALT"Kurlansky approaches Havana like an Impressionist painter, building the image of this metropolis of 2 million inhabitants with subtle brushstrokes." - Washington Post on HAVANA"An early favorite . . . Everybody can learn, and everybody will eat." - Washington Post on INTERNATIONAL NIGHT

Kurlansky's book may be better described as a how milk was USED in history, rather than as a history of milk. The book is well written, but it is confounding to have so many errors in the book, and so many conclusions that are simply wrong. For example, Kurlansky speculates on why we always see images in art of women breast feeding from the left. Well, the reason, if you ask a breast feeding mother, is that if you're right handed, you need the right hand to take care of everything else. He states as well, that cows produce 50-70 pounds of methane PER DAY. Think about that: 50-70 pounds PER DAY. Multiply that. That's a lot of gas (a pound of methane is just under a cubic gallon of volume) per year, and the number is wrong: the numbe is 70-120kg per YEAR. He has a substantial chapter on dairy product use in Asia. I checked with an expert in the field. Her assessment "good writing, bad facts." "Plumb pudding" is not named because "raisins were once called plums." "Plumb" is short for the Latin word for lead, because there was a lead toy placed in "Plumb pudding, " and sometimes still is. Bottom line is: people who read this book are in fact going to know something about the subject, but not everything. They, like me, are going to look at the new information and think "I didn't know that," and there's a reason: it's wrong. The 3 stars are because of the quality of the writing, and the interesting recipes.

Mr. Kurlansky has a special skill with taking a small slice of the world—cod, salt, paper, the Basques—and showing how that small slice has had a huge impact on history, often in ways that is not immediately obvious. This time around he takes on milk and, as usual, does an excellent job. There is much to learn here. Mammals are not biologically designed to drink milk beyond babyhood. Sometime over the past millennia, however, some humans have essentially bred themselves to be able to digest milk as an adult. (And some have not; thus, the lactose-intolerant.) Throughout that time to the present day, arguments about milk have raged. Is milk actually good for you? If so, which milk is best? (Cow? Goat? Sheep? Camel? Horse?...)In point of fact, for most of history, milk has been comparatively unsafe to drink. It is easily contaminated and spoils quickly; thus, the development of cheeses and other dairy products. It is only in the past 100 years or so that pasteurization and other methods of purifying milk have made it safe enough to be generally sought after. Even then, people complained that safe milk was not as wholesome and tasty as raw milk. Milk, it seems, has always fights an uphill battle. But what made milk desirable in the first place? Mr. Kurlansky reminds us that, until wide-scale production of sugar cane and sugar beets, milk was the sweetest food available to humans, apart from honey. That is why, in the Bible, the land of Canaan is referred to as a “land of milk and honey”—sweetness upon sweetness. In a world saturated with sugary foods and drinks, it is easy to forget this. The main weakness in this book is the number of recipes scattered throughout the text. He notes that these are recipes worth trying at home; however, I would doubt that. I found most of them to be difficult to follow. Granted, I am not much of a cook but from what little I could gather, but they didn’t seem appetizing to me either. Many of them have some historical interest but not enough to justify how many he provides. Maybe a real cook would feel otherwise.Milk is so common in the United States today that it is difficult to remember that this is only a recent phenomenon. Mr. Kurlansky takes us back through the history and shows us the huge impact the development of this foodstuff has had on us. It is definitely worth a read, even if you skip the recipes.

I've been of fan of Mark Kurlansky since I first read "Salt," which led me to purchase all of his books as the years went by. "Milk" isn't my favorite book of his, but it was still a good read, perfect for a nerd like me. Fun to read, I learned a lot of fascinating facts and informative tidbits about dairy products and the hows and whys of how they have been used--and transformed--over the millennia. No matter what the subject (or how mundane and perhaps boring it sounds), you can't go wrong picking up a book about a topic Mark Kurlansky has researched and written about.

I am a big fan of Kurlansky's books on "micro-history". I have read Cod, Paper and Salt and loved how he weaved each of those topics into the bigger picture in history. Milk has missed the mark. Too many recipes interrupting the history and facts. It's as much a cookbook with some history as it is a history book with some recipes. I found myself bored and wishing he had left a few recipes out or put them in the end in an appendix. If you are fascinated with recipes, including arcane measurements, by all means read it.

I am a milk lover myself. I keep the kashrut dietary rules which makes the presence of milk (or not) centerpiece of my eating habits. I do drink milk as a half connoisseur half delicatessen specialist. Thus the motivation to read this book. Liked it (wouldn't say loved it). But as always, Kurlansky, gives a tremendous historic perspective, intelligently, about eating subjects. From cod to salt, milk this time. Good enough stuff.

As a food historian, I am always on the lookout for a new book--and since I love Kurlansky's work, I jumped at this one. It is a fabulous telling of how important milk is in many cultures. Kurlansky puts in recipes, some are odd--but that is not the main focus. It reads like a novel--well paced and interesting.

At first I was skeptical about this book but I have read many of his other books and found them well researched and informative. This book is likewise. Much to be learned about an everyday item.

A baby is born hungry. What to feed the little creature? Mother's milk! It's a very old answer but this book shows that cheese, refrigeration, and pasteurization have changed the game.
