About the Author
Courtney Watson McCarthy is a paper engineer and graphic designer. With a degree in theatrical scenic design, she worked as a model builder and designer in a variety of elds before discovering the magic of movable books. From the time she dissected her rst pop-up book, determined to solve the riddle of how it worked, she was hooked. After experimenting with cards and other small projects, she went on to design and engineer Eye Magic, M.C. Escher Pop-Ups, New York Times―acclaimed Gaudi´ Pop-Ups, Pop-Up Numbers, Dali´ Pop-Ups, and Hokusai Pop-Ups. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her husband and two daughters.  Martin Howard is the author of more than fifty books. I have always been facinated with POP up books, cards, scenery, etc. So I really enjoy the how-to's of how they are made. Book very informative.
I collect pop-up books, study paper engineering, and am a big fan of MC Escher's. In short, I'm a key demographic for this book. Unfortunately, it fails miserably on most accounts. The book's inartful paper engineering actually detracts from the beauty of Escher's original designs. Most of the designs are rendered as two-dimensional "floating planes," which actually work against the three-dimensional (four dimensional?) designs originally drawn by Escher. I agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer who labeled this "Flat and Boring," and wonder what the work would've been like were it attempted by paper engineering master such as Sally Hewitt or Ron Van Der Meer.
This is a great book! I've always liked M.C. Escher's interesting graphic art of buildings and other structures, and the pop-ups bring it to life. The artist was far ahead of his time.
As a kid, Escher's work fascinated me as my brain tried to unravel the twists and impossibilities inherent in his art. This amazing collection of pop-ups builds on Escher's work, retaining his singular sense of depth and interplay of elements while bringing them into the third dimension. Rather than breaking the illusions that Escher created, Watson McCarthy's designs add a new level of mystery as you try to figure out not only how Escher created his images but how she, the paper engineer, so successfully translated those flat images into complex and fantastical constructions. The blending of designs works wonderfully well. I discover a little something new each time I go through the book and have been thrilled to watch my young daughter get caught up in the designs as well. This is a phenomenal book for those who are fascinated by Escher and his work as well as those who can be absorbed by and appreciate the subtle craft of finely designed paper engineering.
My husband is a huge Escher fan to the point that it is hard to find him interesting Escher gifts now. This gift, however, he loved! It's a nice idea for a person needing something unique. The quality of the popups were stunning and really bring the art to life. It would not only be good for artsy people like my husband, but I could see it working well for getting kids interested in art since it really did bring his work to life.
Gift for my father in law.I loved this book, so did my husband's father (he's 84), and everyone else was totally jealous! It sits on coffee table and both parents have something nice to say about it every time.
I got a copy for my grandson for Christmas. And one for myself. It's awe-inspiring. I'd love to spend a few days inside Escher's brain; the man had a unique way of viewing the world.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that this book changed the way I view the world. Actually, it wasn’t just the book; like many others, I also follow Dr. Peterson’s University of Toronto lectures that he generously posts for free on Youtube.So, I’m going to take a stab at briefly reducing some of the overarching themes found in the book for someone thinking about picking it up. Although, don’t expect the book to be reduced; it’s quite technical in parts.The world can and should be viewed as a place made up of experiences or tools, rather than simply objects, which is how we’ve been trained to do as post-Enlightenment human beings. That’s the primary difference between a person in 2017 CE and a person in 2017 BCE. It’s not intelligence; it’s a matter of viewpoint.Thus, if you asked an ancient Sumerian to describe a coffee cup, he’d probably say something like: “It looks like a nice place to store my liquid.†If you asked a man today, he might say: “Well it’s a small object made out of glass with a handle on it.â€Maybe you’re thinking so what: What difference does that difference in mindset make? Actually I think it’s central to Peterson’s views. A modern atheist, for example, may say, “look there’s a coffee cup; I can see it; I can touch it; I can break it; therefore it’s real! I can’t see God and I can’t touch God, therefore there is no God.†Peterson argues that of course modern people often come to that conclusion. We’ve been trained to think differently than the people who wrote the Bible, for example.But they didn’t see the world as a place that was made out of objects. They were interested in handing down collective wisdom and experiences to the next generation. Stories like Genesis, for example, which find earlier versions of itself being told by Zoroastrianists, may have been handed down via the oral tradition for tens of thousands of years before that. Our ancestors were handing down a psychologically correct blueprint for how to live. Why is it psychologically correct? Well, look around you. Is there evil in the world? He cites the logic of Solzhenitsyn and Jung to answer that question with an emphatic yes!For example, Jung said “…inasmuch as I become conscious of my shadow I also remember that I am a human being like any other.â€The shadow Jung refers to represents the capability of man to do malevolence. Jung is telling us that if we understand our capacity to do evil, we have a real shot at harnessing our capacity to do good.So there’s good and there’s evil, neither of which can be quantified or measured by science. But if we live in a scientific world and there is no way to measure or quantify evil, then does that mean nothing is good, and thus, nothing is evil?This leads me back to Peterson’s idea that mythology found in the collective unconscious and handed down via religious stories is psychologically correct and since it has formed the basis for western civilization for two millennia now, pulling the rug of Judeo-Christian ideas out from underneath our feet has been/will be disastrous for our future.It’s very difficult to reduce the concepts into something reasonably small, because there’s so much more, and I butchered half of what I did write. But at least this may give you an idea of what to expect in the book. Big thanks to Peterson for putting his lecture videos up on Youtube. I recommend watching those as a companion to the book.Also, there is a brand new abridged version of the book available through PDF, released for free today, and it’s only about 15,000 words. That’s about the equivalent to a 75 page paperback book. For a lot of people, that’s going to be much preferable to his 500+ page unabridged version.Dr. Peterson is actually giving away the full book on his website at Jordanbpeterson.com. (edit: I first wrote this review back in July of 2017, so I'm not certain these last two statements are still true)Check it out.
Sent it to my brother in Prison. He and the other inmates are spellbound by the contents of the book. Two other inmates have ordered it while my brother finishes it.Update December 2018:My brother recently finished this book for the second time. He told me that it changed how he sees the world overall. That it helped him understand why he did what he did. And how he could change for the better. That he is capable of the evilest of evils. But also that he is capable of the best of the good...My brother and I lost our father suddenly in 2016. He had a terrible time with it as he could not attend my Father's funeral service as he was sentenced to a 10-year prison sentence. I had a hard time myself. But I made it a point to be the strongest and most reliable person at my fathers funeral. I felt like I had no other choice, I was the oldest and legally had to take care of a lot. Then Jordan Peterson came on the scene. You know, that famous JRE episode in 2016. It validated so much for me. Why I was having a hard time at university (SJWs). And how I conducted myself with my father's death. Then I looked up this book and immediately sent it to my brother. To my surprise, he read it within a few months. When he called to tell me about it, I was not only impressed with how much he grasped, but also how he saw himself in everyone; how he saw everyone in himself; it surprised me how much of an intellectual education he gained as well as a spiritual one.I am proud to say that he has been on an upward spiral. My brother's positive changes can't all be blamed on Jordan Peterson's Maps of Meaning, but it certainly is high up on the hierarchy of things that motivated him to change. Now he is the chaplain's assistant, he mentors and leads groups for men in prison, he has lost a significant amount of weight through his cross-fit regimen, and he finds meaning in some of the most mundane tasks. In fact, yesterday he called and said he had to clean toilets. The worse job in prison. But he decided to be the best toilet cleaner he could possibly be. Interestingly, he felt peace. He found meaning doing that.So what's the conclusion? Well, time will tell. But I will say this, I just paid to higher him a parole attorney. It is possible after serving 4 years in prison that he might get out in 2019. If he can find peace, meaning, and perspective in prison then I believe he will do great things out in the real world.If you read this Dr. Jordan Peterson I want to thank you for the influence you have had on life of my brother and myself. I finally have my brother back.
This is one of my favorite books.It is very dense and takes commitment to get through and understand, but it's worth it.Maps of Meaning is the type of book you read a little of then go on a walk to process. Because it is about the fundamental meta-myth which underlies culture you begin to see JPs model everywhere.Reading these other reviews, and the quotes on the back of the book I feel like a lot of people didn't get it. Or maybe they read it like a novel: not pausing when they stopped absorbing the full depth of the words. It's a deep work and connected a lot of the other works I have read in this field.I'd strongly recommend Jordan Peterson's YouTube channel as an accompaniment... or if you decide MoM is a bit too much.Definitely a book I want a hard copy of on my shelf.
This book is tough to understand in places. The author reports that he over edited it and that he was working out his ideas as he wrote. It is more than worth the trouble. It, and other work the author has done, has changed my life. And I am old and have seen a lot. Just read it.

I'm truly glad I found these books. They are a fun escape from a rocky patch in my life. (Geeze, at least I hope it's just a patch.....?) A manic depressive husband who decided to go on an epic mid life crisis after our neighbor had a heart attack at 44. A flat out depressed 15 year old daughter who cuts herself for reasons I can't fathom but according to her psychiatrist & therapist I need to be "understanding" ( understanding about something I can't fathom, there's a contradiction in there I think) A 13 yr old son who so recently thought the sun & moon revolved around my awesomeness but now slinks around me in a desperate attempt to avoid embarrassing contact at all cost and whose idols are grown men who live with their parents believing they are making a good living by uploading videos on YouTube. "Sigh" Everyone told me teenagers would be tough.The Bear ate my pants is only the second book I've read (I'm doing it a little backwards since I chanced across Shave My Spider first) but I have really really (really) enjoyed them both and am looking forward to reading the next one. In my world where attempts at cheerful, light-heartedness are greeted with an annoyed desire to shoo me away, they have been funny and interesting in this surreal sort of way that makes you believe that YOU could travel to cool, fascinating, remote places and not just survive but have a plethora of kick ass experiences to cherish. I mean Hell, if Tony can do it without getting dead then ....... = D.I highly recommend the books.Thanks Tony, keep writing books & blogging forever, amen
This is a story that will make you wonder just how much,is too much forthe human body to handle. You will shake you head in amazement and wounded just how this guy survived to tell about his adventures, rescuinganimals from inhuman treatment by people Ecuador. Then rehabilitating themand then releasing them back to the jungle. Then there is all the other characters who volunteered to who came and left. Plus all the attic antics thatwill have you laughing till you can't breath, but life continues for them all, especially their friendships. A must read adventure and true story.Debra H.
I've read reviews that are highly critical of the language (F and S bombs) and also some sex. Frankly, there weren't that many bombs and the sex was very much in context and written about with great humor and fun.The author is an incredible storyteller! I felt as if I were there with him and appreciated his turn of phrase and view on delightfully outrageous situations.There were a few chapters I sped through due to some graphic medical and other squeamish (to me) situations. But still wanted to rate this 5 stars.Do wish the author would find a better editor. His poor grammar and incorrect tense usage is a a bit off-putting at times, but still, a great story teller. So, I gave the book 6 stars, but had to downgrade by one star for less than stellar grammatical and tense use.Thank you for sharing your adventures, TJS, and allowing us to laugh (and cry) along with you!
The author was a twenty something year old native of England with no clear direction in life when he decided to volunteer in Ecuador at an animal rescue. He writes of his experiences with the animals and people he meets in a well written, easy to read fashion, most of which I found humorous but not laugh out loud funny.I thought the author was kind of a goofy, fun-loving jerk, until the part with the injured caiman. That event really humanized him in my eyes and I think that everyone who has lost a beloved (or not so beloved) pet can understand the emotions experienced.I would like to have read more of his experiences upon his return to England, (in what ways did he grow besides becoming semi-fluent in Spanish?) but I understand that he continues the story in another two books.
With a title like "That Bear Ate My Pants," how could I pass this one up? It didn't hurt that it was billed as a humor book, or that it was about a man working on a wildlife reserve -- I love animals, and having grown up around them I can attest that there can be plenty of hilarity in dealing with them on a regular basis. The fact that this was a free e-book at the time I downloaded it didn't exactly hurt either...As a lot of reviewers have pointed out already -- yes, this book has quite a bit of cursing. But if you can get past the swear words, it's a clever and hilarious account of one man's efforts to make a difference.Tony is an aspiring actor who, in an effort to find himself, flies from his native London to faraway Ecuador to volunteer at the Santa Martha wildlife rehabilitation center. There he finds said center is half-farm, half-reserve, a ramshackle collection of buildings and (badly) handbuilt pens housing everything from monkeys to ocelots to a rambunctious bear to the world's fattest puma. Tony butts heads with both fellow volunteers (the friendly and earnest but annoyingly vegetarian-minded Toby, the spoiled rich girl Layla, the feisty Irish sisters Emer and Marie, and others) and the reserve's permanent workers (including stern owner Johnny and machete-happy Jimmy), gets bitten and scratched at least once by every resident animal, adopts the world's stupidest dog, romances a native woman despite their language barrier, and otherwise finds himself hopelessly out of his element in a faraway land. But over the course of his stay he'll find himself developing strong bonds with the animals and his fellow workers... and learn a few things about himself in the process.As I've stated before, Tony swears quite a bit in the writing of this book. I know this is a deal-breaker for many readers, and I usually don't like books where every other word is the F-word (one of the reasons I hated "Julie and Julia"), but here the writing was entertaining enough -- and Tony's voice engaging enough -- that I was willing to overlook the profanity. Still, other potential readers might appreciate a word of warning.Beyond that, this book was both hilarious and oddly touching. Every animal in the book seems to want a piece of Tony, and yet he finds himself growing attached to them all, whether it's the caiman that tries to take a piece of his finger to the bear who loves to pull the plug on her artificial pond just to watch the workers refill it over and over again. He touches on the problems and heartbreaks of trying to rehabilitate an animal to return it to the wild, but also the rewards of all that hard work. And he has the good sense to find humor in even the worst situations, and find a laugh at his own expense. Excellent book. Wong is one of my favorite authors and I love hearing about his experiences and ideas on the game. While this book is a few decades old, it's still very useful to today's counter/blackjack player, and a very pleasant read. A must read for anyone interested in the game of blackjack, this book is one of the classics. If you haven't already, I'd recommend following this book up with Wong's "Blackjack Secrets" another great read.
Indeed a classic. However I would say that at least 60-80% of the book needs to be updated to fit the contemporary BJ world. To be honest, I only find less than twenty pages of the book to be helpful to grow my card counting skills.
Professional Blackjack by Stanford Wong is one of the best blackjack books ever written with a great explanation and charts for both the most widely used counting system in the world in Hi-Lo and probably the most powerful or very close to the most powerful systems ever devised in the halves count, a must have for any serious player for sure.
"Stanford Wong" is one of the greatest authors on the subject. Reading this book is much easier with background knowledge first. A complete beginner could learn from this book. However, this is a more advanced guide in my view. If you use high low you should read this book at least 3 times.
If you want to learn how the MIT students took Vegas for millions, then this is your book. It explains the math and theory behind what they did which is both interesting and useful if you want to try it yourself.
Wonderful read for all levels of players
