What Trauma Does to People After a traumatic experience, the human system of self-preservation seems to go onto permanent alert, as if the danger might return at any moment. ―Judith Herman, Trauma and Recovery A key skill to navigating life's inevitable stressors and challenges is our brains' ability to maintain flexibility and make choices on how to respond when faced with a threat or a challenge. This capacity involves primarily the prefrontal area of the brain and emerges slowly during the course of development. Those who have experienced trauma may find that they blow up in response to minor provocations, freeze when frustrated, or become helpless in the face of trivial challenges. This inflexibility diminishes the capacity to choose, and without understanding the context of the reactions, their behavior can appear bizarre or out of control. "Neuroimaging technology has revealed that when people are reminded of a personal trauma they activate the areas of the brain regions that support intense emotions while decreasing activity of brain structures involved in the inhibition of emotions and the translation of experience into communicable language" (van der Kolk, 2006 p. 2). Simply it becomes difficult to choose an appropriate behavioral response in the face of intense emotions. Due to the reality that most traumas occur within the context of interpersonal relationships the problem becomes even more complex. One significant factor in the development of the prefrontal areas of the brain and the ability to respond to emotions effectively occurs as a child is able to develop in the presence of familiar and trusted people in his or her life. These significant relationships are critical to development and later to the ability to emotionally regulate. The child being in distress signals caregivers to respond with an appropriate action. They discover what is troubling the child and how to respond in a way to comfort and help the child to soothe the emotional reactions. This process becomes thwarted when the caregiver is unable to respond to the emotional needs of the child and developmentally the child does not learn the process of self-soothing. Bessel van der Kolk, MD, is a clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic stress. His work integrates developmental, neurobiological, psychodynamic and interpersonal aspects of the impact of trauma and its treatment. He is a professor of psychiatry at Boston University Medical School and serves as the director of the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress Complex Trauma Network. He states, "Most traumas occur in the context of interpersonal relationships, which involve boundary violations, loss of autonomous action, and loss of self-regulation. When people lack sources of support and sustenance, such as is common with abused children, women trapped in domestic violence, and incarcerated men, they are likely to learn to respond to abuse and threat with mechanistic compliance or resigned submission" (van der Kolk 2006, p. 7). Interpersonal relational trauma occurs where there is exploitive harm done to one person by another within the context of a personal relationship. This can occur in the context of many human relationships such as marriage, family, parent/child, work, or dating in the form of betrayal, addiction, abuse, violence, or exploitation. There is significant impact on the victim and often results in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma can restrict the ability to resolve future stressful and painful situations. Simply put, it undermines resilience. One long-term impact of trauma is the fact that often-traumatized individuals have difficulty recognizing how they are feeling and then fail to respond in an appropriate and helpful way. They become out of touch with their own feelings, bodies, and needs, which in turn makes it more difficult to respond to the feelings, sensations, and needs of others in their lives. The pathway of healing includes learning to reconnect to our feelings, bodies, and the others in our lives. We learn to be present again with ourselves and the world around us. Being present and paying attention changes our lives. Most cultures and religions have practices that help us in this pursuit. The goal often has been to enrich our personal awareness and knowledge of self. Dr. Daniel Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he is on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center. Siegel emphasizes how being fully aware individually helps us to attune to another person, not only changing us but changing the very nature of our personal relationships. Simply put, "attuned relationships promote resilience and longevity" (Siegel 2010a, p. 13). This attunement helps with neural integration, which allows us to be more flexible and resilient as we deal with the curveballs of life. Siegel discusses how our resilience can be undermined by past trauma, addiction, and loss when we begin to respond to life's challenges in a restricted manner. He states in his book Mindsight that "when we block our awareness of feelings, they continue to affect us anyway. Research has shown repeatedly that even without conscious awareness, neural input from the internal world of body and emotion in?uences our reasoning and our decision making. Even facial expressions we're not aware of, even changes in heart rhythm we may not notice, directly affect how we feel and so how we perceive the world. In other words, you can run but you cannot hide" (Siegel 2010, p. 124). This book highlights how attachment can become toxic; these are the underpinnings of trauma bonds. Our bonding in attachment can be undermined by trauma, either in the past or in our present. What Is Trauma? Throughout our life spans, we are all introduced to trauma in one way or another. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk states, "As human beings we belong to an extremely resilient species. Since time immemorial we have rebounded from our relentless wars, countless disasters (both natural and man-made), and the violence and betrayal in our own lives. But traumatic experiences do leave traces, whether on a large scale (on our histories and cultures) or close to home, on our families, with dark secrets being imperceptibly passed down through generations. They also leave traces on our minds and emotions, on our capacity for joy and intimacy, and even on our biology and immune systems" (van der Kolk 2014, p. 1). Unresolved trauma undermines our resilience and our capacity to connect both to ourselves and to those around us. At its core, the human response to trauma is about the loss of connection, the loss of connection to our identity, our bodies, our memories, and to the people surrounding us in our lives. The loss of connection can be hard to recognize at times, but the result is recognizable. Trauma has the capacity to undermine our sense of self, feelings of well-being, and connection to life. The world within and around us can become very restrictive, limiting our ability for choice, creativity, and connection. Dr. Peter Levine, a clinical consultant at The Meadows, developed Somatic Experiencing, a naturalistic approach to the resolution and healing of trauma, defines trauma as "any experience which stuns us like a bolt out of the blue; it overwhelms us, leaving us altered and disconnected from our bodies" (Levine and Klein, 2006, p. 4). When individuals are in the overwhelmed state, their previously held coping mechanisms no longer function, and they can be left feeling hopeless and helpless. The impact of trauma is psychological, neurobiological, and psychobiological. In other words, it affects our mind, body, spirit, and relationships. This loss of connection to ourselves affects us in many different ways. One of the most pronounced is in our ability to emotionally regulate and in our perception of ourselves and those around us. Often the result is emotional reactions that are under- or overregulated. Dr. Daniel Siegel refers to this process as the window of tolerance in which arousal fluctuates between high arousal and low arousal. In the middle is the optimal arousal zone. Those who have suffered through traumatic situations often have a narrow band of optimal arousal and fluctuate between high and low arousal. At times they may overreact to something relatively minor and underreact when action is preferred. One of the goals in the healing process is to widen this "window of tolerance" and increase the optimum zone. Working in therapy, attending recovery groups, talking with trusted friends, mindfulness, connection to our bodies, and attention to self-care are all ways of increasing our internal integration and promoting connection. In this process the window of tolerance is widened, which allows us to regulate in the presence of stress or intense emotions in a way that we would not have been able to do prior. (Siegel 2010b). Interpersonal Relational Trauma This book focuses on the impact of interpersonal relational trauma. We will be exploring the impact of betrayal and exactly what traces are left behind. There are unique qualities when the trauma is by the hand of those who are expected to love, protect, and cherish us. This type of trauma is interpersonal relational trauma. When we are hurt, it is natural to turn to those we are closest to for comfort and healing. However, when these people are also the source of our trauma and pain we are lost in a painfully difficult double bind. It is confusing and difficult to navigate. Before delving into relational trauma, it is important to understand the nature of trauma and its impact. This gave me some help in looking at myself and why I have some of the patterns I do and how to think about changing them.
This is an important book. I've been facilitating my own recovery and development for many many years and I've been at the tail end of my journey for quite some time. I had avoided this book for many years because I felt that I understood the trauma bond dynamic well enough having lived through it for many decades. And indeed... I do understand it well which was affirmed by the author. However this book does crystallize a few extra elements that I had not fully processed and it was worth purchasing. One of the very helpful aspects of this book is that it will also enlarge your understanding of how nuanced and complicated people are and there will be less anger and judgement and resentment of your fellow man because you'll realize that much of human behavior has nothing personal to do with the victim . People are generally just unconsciously reenacting their own unresolved traumas. You will never waste money or time on a book like this because the case studies and examples provided from real life will broaden your understanding and perspective. This particular field of study into human nature and it's related aspects of personal growth is not grasped or internalized by reading a few boos or watching a few videos. It's a process of contemplation and reflection and many authors can be quite tangential. This authors content is all very relevant. It's a worthy investment of time and money.
I cannot recommend this book enough! Ever wonder why you just can't seem to walk away from someone who you KNOW is only going to cause you more despair & heartache? Even though you've been completely humiliated by the amount of chances you've given him/her, only to be permanently scarred again and again. They rarely seem truly remorseful (if ever) about the pain they cause you and any apology given is done in such a manner that YOU feel responsible and YOU feel bad!! Or why you feel so desperate to get them to love you?Betrayal Bonds/Trauma Bonds..
I'll start off by saying that it is well-worth the money, the bigger question is whether it is worth the time. For me, it was. It took me 3 months to finally get through the book and complete all of the exercises. It was painful, but the book gave me the tools and courage to confront my past traumas and make sense of them. I had read some articles about trauma bonds online prior to reading this, and they gave me some basic, surface-level insights into the topic. This book went in-depth and helped me understand how it had been impacting my life and the steps I needed to take to break those trauma bonds. Before reading the book, I was fairly certain I was going to end a 4 year relationship. Two weeks into the book, I was able to get the courage to do so. Everything is still a work in progress, but this book has helped me out in several ways. I probably shed more tears in the past three months than I had in the last 20 years.
I learned so much about myself and my relationship. Understanding why i still feel attached to a sad and abusive man helped strengthen my resolve to stay away. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in building healthier relAtionships.
This book offers a pathway for healing from betrayal that takes you step by step to recovery. Having been a co-dependent I am finding that this book gives me a new freedom, not experienced in other co-dependent books (my application, he does not mention co-dependency). He takes you through exercises that identify your deepest betrayal(s). Putting everything into perspective to be free, and move on to a life without the heart wound of the betrayal.
This book has, what seems to me, a groundbreaking synthesis of the available literature out there. The writing style is very accessible and has some great exercises in it. This really helps make sense of why people seem compelled to stay in relationships that are clearly so wholly unhealthy for them.
I was seeing patterns in my life that the ones I trusted the most were betraying me and this would literally knock me off my center every time. Well the Betrayal wound goes way back to a repeated childhood wound. The work needed to complete this book is not easy. I am planning to eventually share my work with a new therapist I am seeing.So for me a Betrayal of trust lead me into jobs that exploited me for their benefit (not mine) and my latest relationship ended in Betrayal all these are due to unresolved grief about the original betrayal wounds from a parent.
Don’t let your neighbor borrow it because they will stop answering your calls, not return it, and move. Anyway, This book is amazing!!! If you have been or are currently in Domestic Violence relationship, have a parent or entire family with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, abusive family/friends etc. or experienced traumatic childhood events. This book will help you realize that those situations have made you feel abusive people are safe and you feel comfortable being treated less than, which was a huge eye opener for me. I fall back sometimes but this book has helped me so much. The stories are relatable and advice is real. Answers so many questions and helps you find answers. Does not fix anything but helps alleviate some of the pain. When an ex acts “crazy†it’s because the other partner was abusive in someway.

-Warnes has done a masterful job of bringing to life 1000 years of fascinating Russian history. The introduction gives a good historical overview of how Tsarism came into being. a fine addition to the series of chronicles of various rulers - This one provides excellent chronological and dynastic backbone and skeleton on which a teacher can flesh out a course on Russian history. The biographical sketches are well written and sufficient.. Illustrations are fine as well
Very well written, covers a lrg. range of hist. I would suggest that if one does not have ,at least, a middle knowledge of Imperial,the book may be tedeious. As for a historical (first person) report this vol. is quite special If the Romanovs interest you, jump in and learn a lot from a small book. Book: AAAAA
I thoroughly enjoyed this balanced account of the czars. I wish there could have been more treatment of those that preceded the Romanovs--I guess you'd call them the "Dukes of Muscovy"--but it's probably for obvious reasons (viz., the availability of 15th-century vs. 19th-century sources) that they're slighted. Watch out for editorial problems all over the place. In one diagram, somebody's wife is also indicated as that same somebody's daughter. This is just plain laziness: someone neglected to sufficiently carefully review the diagram and delete the offending 5 mm. line segment. Also, in a factoid box summarizing Nikolai II, his father is listed as Aleksandr II when, in fact, his father was quite obviously Aleksandr III. Also, the book steered uncomfortably clear of some of the unsolved mysteries of the throne, e.g., by reducing the eighteen-day rule of Czar Konstantin (27 Nov.-14 Dec. 1825) to but a single, unstressed sentence. In overall quality, this book compares favorably to the other members of the series: indeed, it is often superior. But, in its striving for balance, it omits some important coverage. More deserves to be said about Ivann IV Vasiliyevich ("The Terrible"--in actuality, "The Awesome" is the proper translation of his title, "Groznij") and Pyotr I Alekseyevich ("The Great") because these czars made outstanding contributions that shaped the character of Russia, not just because they were on the throne for 30+ years. The czars' role in Russian history cannot be compared to the role of any other succession of leaders in the history of any other nations: the czars were the heart and soul of the empire they so tenderly loved with such religious conviction (not to mention "the divine right of kings"); without exaggeration, the czars WERE Russia.

This volume is an excellent resource for gaining a greater understanding of Alchemy and the Hermetic tradition. Tony DeLuce should be commended for producing such a wonderful edition of Case's original Alchemy course material. Paul Foster Case - a true Adept within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (Alpha et Omega) in America - worked for several years under the guidance of Moina Mathers. Upon leaving the Order, he founded his own magical organization called B.O.T.A. (Builders of the Adytum). Case wrote a number of courses for the students in the B.O.T.A. and the material in this book comprised an early version of one of these courses. Case is known for communicating complex esoteric information and ideas in a clear and precise manner. It is a pleasure to read Case's lesson plan for cutting through the enigma of Alchemy, getting right to the powerful heart of what Spiritual Alchemy is, and how it can be used to benefit the magical life. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in the writings of Paul Foster Case and this book is an excellent addition to the library of any Hermetic scholar. As others before me have said, this book is a must for students of the Great Work - whether you are a member of BOTA or the Golden Dawn System. It truly is a masterpiece. Much of the information was withheld from the later BOTA teachings as being too advanced, which it may be for some without an alchemical background. However, this book fills in and explains many things as well as gently guides you to explore your Inner Teacher as well. Thank you to the ROGD for releasing this & other Paul Foster Case teachings.
essential reading
This book is too advanced for me right now. But, I couldn't help but order it, knowing I would need its knowledge soon. Just browsing through though, I can see that it is more invaluable knowledge from Case. Once I understand my Tarot deck better, I plan on really studying this book. I find myself thumbing through it and reading bits of it, and I know that I made a good decision buying it. I also like to see that someone is taking the time to publish stuff like this and share it with people outside their organization. I am not sure yet if I will ever affiliate with the Rosicrucian Order of the Golden Dawn (there just seems to be so many schools now, I'm not sure which ones I will subscribe to), but I think its great that they are publishing material that they find to be essential.
The content of the first half of this book is identical with Esoteric Keys of Alchemy but the second half of this book includes advanced material not included in 'Estoteric Keys of Alchemy', i.e. 'The Alchemical Process', 'The Twelve Stages of the Great Work', and PFC's practical instruction. Also this edition has much improved diagrams than the original material published in the early 1930s.This is Paul Foster Case at this best - articulating the esoteric aspects of Spiritual Alchemy in the clear and concise manner we have all become accustomed to expect from him. This is arguably Paul Case's Magnum Opus - highly recommended to every student of Alchemy in general and Paul Case in particular. I would give it more than 5 stars if Amazon.com would let me.
A brilliant study...Paul Foster case at his peak. Not for the weak of Will. These are tough lessons, but transformative and expertly written. A must-have, in my opinion.
Cannot go wrong with P.F.C. His usual thoroughness brings understanding. He explains that according to his understanding alchemy's focus is basically the transmutation of the alchemist.
I highly recommend Paul Foster Case's works, if you are a student of the Esoteric. Extremely knowledgeable and written accessibly.
Very interesting and quite revealing in some aspects but definitely not needed for BOTA members who studied the respective course (The Great Work)

Came as promised, book was in excellent condition!!
I bought this book in preparation for a service trip to the West Bank. I found it very useful for organizing my thoughts before talking to residents and student nurse anesthetists about fluid management and local anesthetic toxicity. There is a drawing of the sacrum that nicely complemented the clinical instruction on identifying the sacral hiatus. I'll take it with me on my next trip.
Content-wise the book seems to be ok.My main problem with it is how difficult it is to read. It is written in a way that is not very easy to follow. Something simple could require several reads to understand the information due to how it was worded and put together.
Love this book, and line of books. Great coverage of topics.
