Nothing is tied together to provide some kind of conceptual understanding. Exhibits and detailed steps are referenced that do not exist. Like O'Reilly books they are never edited properly.

It's not a reference book. Its a well written book about how the Linux kernel works.Doesn't have example coding, it's not a reference book for kernel hacking, but it's a good starting point.

Outstanding book that is one of a kind. I gave it five stars because it is hard to find this much information organized into a single book. However, it is not without flaws. I though the section on VFS could have been written and explained better. I found myself using other sources to understand the material.

Well written, but not overly wordy, this one is at my fingertips at all times. I actually have a copy at home, and one at work, as I constantly need to look up a smaller tidbit, only to completely forget it moments later :) Such is life. What I love about it most, is how long it takes me to find, understand, and incorporate what I need to get working- The layout is fantastic that way, and info presented in a clear way, which is easy to understand :)Totally Recommended. (pick up the programming interface from no starch press as well)

It is really a great book to get started with the Linux kernel. I am looking forward to seeing its newer versions.

The Understanding the Linux Kernel (3rd edition) covers essentially all the kernel's major systems and methodologies in depth. It also conveys a deep understanding in terms that an average computer programmer can grasp with effort. Those of you who have designed and built your own operating systems will also gain insight with this book into the reasoning used to do things like memory allocation, device I/O copy operations, and deep memory management techniques. It covers in depth the 32 bit paging systems, but is a little shy on the new SLUB allocator and x86_64 bit paging. IA64 is covered in adequate detail, but more focus is on the 32 bit side of the house. Overall it does give you the locations to look for more information and provides a well organized and intuitive guide to the Linux kernel in general. Highly recommended reading if you are looking to truly understand the Linux kernel, or do things around it (i.e. circumvention of security mechanisms, etc.).

Insanely in depth, and very much a "must read" for folks who are trying to understand what's going on underneath the hood of their Linux system. Albeit a little dated by now, it's still well worth the time and trouble to read. That said, it's been almost a decade since this came out; an update would be most welcome.

I purchased this book to use as a reference. I work in a group that does device driver development. This book is well written in a concise manner. Always has at least a little bit of the info I'm looking for. For example: how not to invoke the "big kernel lock" for device driver invocation and profiling. Not true for the other bloated book: "Linux Kernel Architecture".

If you are brand spanking new to web design, and have never coded a single site, you may want to hold off on this book for a minute. I'm not saying it is not for beginners, because it is. Those new to HTML and CSS may want to get the hang of that before jumping into incorporating Ajax and JavaScript along with advanced CSS techniques.Who is it for? I would recommend this book for art directors, project managers, web designers (all levels), interactive designers, DVD menu designers (though not directly related, you can still take away some important aspects or "patterns"), and especially those that design online training modules (we all know how dull they can be.) Like the DVD menu designers I mentioned above, I think Flash designers can benefit greatly, as well. Though the book is not directly geared toward Flash design, the patterns and "anti-patterns" talked about can easily be used when designing for a Flash experience. The layout of the book is broken up into the 6 "principles" described in the product description of this book. The sections "Make It Direct" and "Stay on the Page" are by far the two largest sections, for they are the most important of the 6. "Keep it Lightweight" is the shortest section/principle, but by no means is rushed or glossed over. It poses some great design ideas to keep it intuitive, discoverable and keep you from designing 'mouse traps.'In order to get the most out of this book, you would have to have designed a web site before reading this book. If you are a project manager or art director in charge of a team designing a web site (but not a web designer yourself), it would benefit you greatly to have a general understanding of web design, HTML, what Ajax is, CSS, cross-browser compatibilities, and Javascript. If you are just managing a team, you do NOT have to know how to code these languages/techniques, but in order to really benefit form this book, it would be better if you generally know what each does. This book could also help bridge the gap for some managers by equipping them with the correct terminology of web design. Just speaking the language of user interface design can help speed up the time it takes to turn your directions into an interface that works the way you intended. The book is detailed and to the point of the benefits of discoverability and weighing your options in the case of just how intuitive you need to make the interface. This book does not read like a my-way-or-the-highway kind of book. Scott mentions the potential pitfalls, disadvantages and possible alternate scenarios that depend on your interactive goals as set by the audience visiting your site.A good number of the examples are from Yahoo! and Netflix sites (because Scott used to work for Yahoo! and now works for Netflix), but I never once felt like it was an advertisement for either one. He manages to spread the love around and uses examples from the Gap, iPhone, blogs, Google, Amazon, and others. In short, the book is an easy read, something that one could go through in a long weekend. There are screenshots and visual examples on virtually every page, so in no way are we left to imagine the event happening. Multiple screenshots are taken when the event happens over the period of several steps. There is even a couple free companion web sites that will show the screenshots in a larger format than the book would allow. While reading the book, you will undoubtedly have many 'ah ha!' moments, or times when you rush to check your previously-designed web sites to see if you need to make a correction to your interface (admit it, we all do.)I highly recommend this book for anyone that designs interfaces, even if they are for mp3 players, touch screens for electronics, or those interactive lobby displays. We all need some help in the area of user interface design.***NOTE: there is NO code in this book. This the theory of designing user interfaces for the web, NOT the code.

I think there are two kinds of "design" books in the web industry: Those who describe a design process (or a methodology) and those who go into the details of user interface design. This book does the latter by describing six UI design principles through various examples. The examples dissect different web UIs and widgets and the pros & cons of each are discussed. The book is an easy read and the examples are very informative and illustrative. There is hardly any introduction or conclusions in the book, just the actual content divided according to the six principles (and chapters, see below). In a way I like this no-nonsense format and I think it makes the book a sort of a reference or a collection of individual pieces of advice you can look up quickly without having to dozens of pages. On the other hand it might not be the right book for beginners in web design. For those who are expanding their expertise from designing information sites to web apps, I highly recommend this book.It should be noted that the book does not deal with web form design. For that topic I recommend Luke Wroblewski's Web Form Design: Filling in the BlanksContents:Principle 1: Make it direct1. In-page editing2. Drag and drop3. Direct selectionPrinciple 2: Keep it lightweight4. Contextual toolsPrinciple 3: Stay on page5. Overlays6. Inlays7. Virtual pages8. Process flowPrinciple 4: Provide an invitation9. Static invitations10. Dynamic invitationsPrinciple 5: Use transitions11. Transitional patterns12. Purpose of transitionsPrinciple 6: React immediately13. Lookup patterns14. Feedback patterns

I got this hoping to collect a few new tips and tools for making cleaner interfaces. Generally I have a lot of respect for O'reilly books but this one let me down. It seems more to be a collection of desktop user interfaces from the late 90s and screenshots of old versions of very popular websites such as Amazon. If you've never done any web design then this will at least introduce you to the common terms for different interface pieces but has no implementation details and can't be referred to as "current" in any sense of the word.

Good advice but pretty basic and not terribly current in its examples. Also some of the "good" examples it uses aren't necessarily ones I personally agree with (yahoo, yahoo mail, ebay). If you're looking for base foundations in web usability, pick it up; if you have some basic experience in web design there are probably better options out there for you.

just what my son needed for class

I am currently developing an intranet site for a large utility. These days everyone wants 'social networking" to be a part of what they do, but that doesn't ever seem to translate into anything more than a Twitter feed or link to a Facebook page. This book clearly details what is required to build a site with social networking characteristics. It itemises the building blocks, the content required and patterns that are required, to make your site hum along. My only criticism would be the excessive Yahoo references throughout - a little like listening to a one-eyed fan giving the broadcast commentary on their own team - but given this book is by Yahoo this is to be expected.

Bought this for my wife, whose bone density test last time was surprising. Very good solid book, not a doctor or researcher herself, but she refers to good research and puts it all together into a nice, coherent, well-organized, well-written, well-thought out book. She convinced me that I should get a bone density test, myself, citing the numbers of men who suffer fractures in their 60s and 70s. She has strong opinions against using the pharmaceutical drugs normally prescribed and gives convincing arguments for avoiding them. She goes into which nutrients and supplements are most helpful in countering bone loss and what kinds of exercises. These include very specific data and arguments that are sound and valid and worth reading about and considering. I think it's important to also read other books on the same subject before deciding on a final course of action, so I purchased two others for my wife (Dr. Lani's No Nonsense Bone Health Guide and The Complete Book of Bone Health by D. Schneider) and these are also great reads for health-related books and very informative, and have a lot of info not in Pizzorno's book that help balance out and add to what we learned here. My wife and I are both long-time health geeks who have a huge library of books on nutrition, health, exercise, etc. and have tried and experimented with many of the ideas we've learned about with many good results and few bad ones. This and the other 2 books I mentioned are all worthwhile and compare favorably to most health related books out there. I would recommend them and we will no doubt hang onto them for some time.

As a health care provider, I was impressed by the depth of research that the authors did and their extensive knowledge of bone physiology, which was excellent. But there is a caveat: whenever an author seems to be selling something, I back off, and that was the case here. These authors endorse a certain combination of supplements, some of which i think are excessive and not well researched. So I would recommend this book for gaining understanding of the condition, and also for a thorough discussion of the drugs in common usage for osteoporosis, all of which pose significant risks to some women who might choose to take them. The nutritional section is also quite well done.

This book SHOULD be read by everyone facing the "antique" category, and WOMEN in their 20's NOT til your life is destroyed by Osteoporosis do you realize the price you pay for little things later in life like pop and milkshakes. This book was bought just as my wife was prescribed Bisphosphonates - after a fractured disk - her entire bone history was mishandled because, REALLY, medical community seems to HAVE no non-prescription way to handle this. As our Pharmacist says - its all we have. Our Chiropractor - who by the way, found the osteopenia that everyone else had missed, and in the FIRST visit about 5 years ago - MY urologist, another well-known pharmacist I heard speak, and OTHERS, have all said basically the same thing - that bisphosphonate treatment is almost worse than the disease itself; and OVER time it may well be.One quote from a researcher in the book, about this drug "Why would ANYONE prescribe this?"There is an additional wealth of information as well - diet, etc that is NOT new to us. WE have a gym at home - my wife uses it maybe 10 hours a week. She eats carefully.Rather than the drug prescribed which is supposed to MAINTAIN your bone density we went looking for ways to INCREASE bone density. The book has a number of suggestions - we were already taking one of them when we bought the book. We asked her doctor about it when the prescription was given but she was unaware of alternatives. There are OTHER suppliments on the market that may be even MORE aggressive in restoring bone health, but we were comfortable with our choice. It's my wife that's been reading it, but the info I get across the table is that she thinks its a goldmine of information. The author, does, however, ignore the existence of pork. WE eat a lot of it. So the nutritional value info is missing in her charts.BUT that does NOTHING to invalidate the research. Its a "full marks" book for us.

Took such a long time to ship--but it's okay. It explains everything very simply; it covers all the basics but doesn't go into enough detail. It's a good book for people that have osteopenia and time to reverse the condition. I have severe osteoporosis so I prefer the more detailed books because I need to turn this around pronto--look at McCormick's book and get this one to accompany his detailed book.

Comprehensive, well written book. I had been taking Fosamax and did not like the way my bones felt, achy and sore. After reading this book, I realize that osteoporosis prescription medications may not be the best answer. I appreciated reading the scientific studies that back up the information and the "roadmap" with diet, exercise, and supplements that can help make my bones stronger and reverse the osteoporosis. I am a believer and have recommended this book to other women with osteopenia and osteoporosis.

"This deep dive into three all-time great moviemakers is the perfect example of why eating your cultural vegetables can be endlessly rewarding, potentially even life-changing." (MovieMaker)"This is a joy to read, and all the more startling when discovering that Schrader was 24 years old when he wrote the original text." (The Film Stage 2018-08-14)“Reading Transcendental Style now, it’s impressive not just how vibrant and convincing a study of a cinematic aesthetics it is, but how prescient it feels.” (Art in America 2018-06-20)

From the Inside Flap

"A welcome opportunity to revisit one of the few essential works of film theory. You can take issue with Schrader's categories and critera and argue with him as you go, but it's the ground on which the exchange between author and reader occurs that matters most. By exploring and identifying the territory of the transcendental, Paul Schrader and his groundbreaking text illuminate what is most precious in the cinema and, by extension, in art itself."—Kent Jones, filmmaker, writer, festival director "For students interested in spirituality and cinema, Transcendental Style in Film is the one book I would label indispensable. A well-read copy should be in every cinephile's library."—Kenneth R. Morefield, Professor of English, Campbell University "As a materialist, I have issues with a transcendental approach toward style, even while supporting Paul Schrader’s critical gifts and his passionate interest in three of my favorite filmmakers. But in his new introduction, his observations about slow cinema from Tarkovsky to Kiarostami to Tarr are every bit as compelling as his earlier insights into film noir."—Jonathan Rosenbaum, author of Placing Movies: The Practice of Film Criticism "Schrader's book is a classic—one of the very few seminal books on religion/spirituality and film. His new introduction linking transcendental style to the time-images of Deleuze and Tarkovsky, as well as slow cinema, which followed, only adds to its importance. A must read!"—Robert K. Johnston, Professor of Theology and Culture, Fuller Theological Seminary, and author of Reel Spirituality: Theology and Film in Dialogue "Before most of us, Paul Schrader sensed, deep in the bones of cinematic form, a potential for spiritual expression. This seminal work has set the terms of the film and religion discussion for decades now. Whether you are fully persuaded by his argument or not, Schrader compels you to take both cinematic form and the impulse toward transcendence seriously. This book remains essential."—Joseph G. Kickasola, Professor of Film and Digital Media, Baylor University, and author of The Films of Krzysztof Kieslowski: The Liminal Image "Paul Schrader's Transcendental Style in Film was a work of striking originality when it appeared some forty-five years ago, all the more remarkable for having been written by a twenty-four-year-old. Though the term 'transcendental style' was in the air, no one before Schrader had identified and analyzed the style with such acuity and depth as he did, and with such wide acquaintance with the relevant literature of philosophical aesthetics and film theory. Since then, the book has become a classic in the history of film theory; its re-issuance, with a lengthy new introduction by Schrader, is welcome. The new introduction is titled 'Rethinking Transcendental Style,' but it turns out that everything Schrader wrote forty-five years ago about transcendental style has stood the test of time. What the new introduction does is set transcendental style within the context of the proliferation in recent decades of anti-narrative 'slow films.' The new introduction is as rich and illuminating in its analyses of these new developments as was the original text of the transcendental style, making clear how these new developments, though superficially similar, are yet fundamentally different."—Nicholas Wolterstorff, Noah Porter Professor Emeritus of Philosophical Theology, Yale University, and author of Art Rethought "With an extensive new introduction, Paul Schrader brings his influential work on transcendental style up to date, relating it to contemporary slow cinema and to recent developments in film criticism. This book is essential for anyone interested in the means by which narrative film can encourage spectators to 'lean into' the film, to experience contemplation and the transcendent."—Carl Plantinga, author of Screen Stories: Emotion and the Ethics of Engagement

Well-articulated.

Seminal reading for a film buff.

This book is an incredible way to immerse oneself in Dreyer, Ozu and Bressons world through Schrader's eyes. A must!

Even if you have the original edition, purchase this 2018 new edition for the new introduction "Rethinking Transcendental Style" where the author updates his understanding of how transcendental style that he wrote about 45 years ago has developed since then. Wow! He diagrams three emerging directions: The surveillance cam, the art gallery, and the mandala. On this diagram, he lists about 30 filmmakers and their relationship to each other and these three directions. An incredible summary! The original edition is then printed in full that includes an analysis of Ozu, Bresson and Dreyer as exemplars of transcendental style in film. Bravo!

I need this for class, I will not say its a good read but not bad, however if I did not have to it for class I would not have.

This book is a gem of appreciation for an all but dying cinematic style. Bottom line, it's an enthusiastic analysis of a very rare style shared by three different filmmakers, all auteurs in their own right. You may disagree with the "spiritual" import, or the importance of the stylistic similarities across cultures, but you cannot deny that Paul Schrader is onto something worth studying. Schrader's background in Calvinism (and its analytic, ascetic tendencies) is a unique and fitting window through which the reader can appreciate Bresson's, Ozu's, and Dreyer's work as it relates to the aesthetics of grace. Schrader's concentration on the primacy of filmic form as a means to communicate with the audience, as opposed to content, vicarious emotion (empathy), and visceral sensations, flies in the face of visual narrative styles today, even the most "artistic."Sure, it's a masters thesis, and sometimes reads like one. It is a little uneven rhetorically and goes in some tangents. But the negative reviews on this book seem emotionally charged with some kind of weird rivalry endemic to the academic world and petty film critics. If you take the time to understand the complexity of stasis, disparity, abundant and sparse means, and the "choices" at work in predestinarian logic and the moment of grace, you won't be disappointed. You'll see Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer and filmmaking in a new light.

I read this years ago, before Schrader was well known as either a screenwriter or a director, but this book introduced me to the three great filmmakers he analyzes here. Hard to believe the same writer would go on to script TAXI DRIVER, HARDCORE, and RAGING BULL. But after you read this you will see the 'transcendental' element is in all of Schrader's screenplays. This book is not for the "movie buff" but a more scholarly audience. But if you are a Schrader fan, it is a must read.

I read the book about thirty years ago and found it contained original, and still useful, insights about film expression. The self-absorbed critics on this page who have panned the book should probably reflect on their own verbal excesses before they criticize Schrader's. Anytime you take on the subject of the transcendental, you will necessarily be speaking metaphorically. Schrader's model may not be precise, but they offer food for thought.
