This is an important book for any photographer.A. It assumes you are familiar with and own studio lights.B. It also assumes you are a pro photographer.It is very well written in terms of lighting, angles, modifiers, camera settings, etc. nothing is left out. You are able to see the finished image as well as the set-ups. The book is short on theory as it is very practical book.Bottom line: If you want to shoot fashion or learn how to achieve "The Look" this book is a necessary start, and worth every penny.
As a professional photographer for over 30 years I find this book very interesting. The book reveals more about how the photographer was thinking about each photo and why more so than how they did it. I like that approach, other readers looking for more details may not. Gatcum tells me just enough about what was used to create the lighting allowing me to verify my own read on what was done and also answer the old how did they do that? Some of the shots are done simply and some have all sorts of lighting going on. The interesting part is getting a read on the why of each image as much as the how. I find myself just enjoying the book and it's images rather than feeling I am reading a textbook.
The variety of photos in this book was surprising. Although it doesn't always go into the deepest detail for the lighting set-up, the diagrams and resulting photos are enough to get you started, or at least to let you decide if that is a direction you want to consider.If you've ever attempted to replicate photos from a magazine and couldn't quite figure out the lighting differences between their photo and yours, this make let you in on the missing link.
I grabbed this book in hopes that it would fire up my creative juices by sharing some fashion inspired lighting ideas. I had hoped for insights in the how's and why's to give me some ideas that I may not have considered.In my opinion it falls a bit short of that mark. Yes there are a large number of sample images and descriptions of the lighting. Unfortunately the lighting descriptions in 99% of the circumstances don't mention anything about the lighting ratios, and what's almost worse than that is that there is little insight about what the photographers were after. Why they chose to light things the way they did. With these two drawbacks you're left with: a) recipe for a cake that tells you the ingredients, but not the quantities. b) A sample result with no insight as to why the lighting formula was chosen in the first place.Another thing about this book that may be of interest to another photographer is that I'd estimate that of the 50 examples, I'd bet that half of them are natural light. Yes, it's good to hear that natural light can be used effectively but what I had expected and hoped for was studio lighting templates.While the book makes no real claims about post processing tips there are a few mentions of using PS for specific effect. And since just about everyone is shooting in digital these days, information on processing those digital negatives can be pretty crucial. Unfortunately when post processing is mentioned there is almost no detail for someone needing direct guidance in that area.I don't think that I would recommend this book.
This book really helped me understand the entire concept of lighting! I've tried multiple setups featured in the book and it hasn't failed me yet! Awesome book to check out to up your photography skills.
This book does have some good concepts. There is a glossary of photography lighting concepts at the beginning that it fairly detailed. What I learned after reading this book was that this was just filler to make the book bigger and therefore justify the price.The concepts in this book are not outlined well enough to be taken seriously. For that, I would recommend you look at something more comprehensive by someone like Scott Kelby.

Zoroastrianism is one if not the most difficult religion to study and fully understand. This book is priceless as it contains 11 chapters of invaluable information and resources needed to study or comprehend this obscure but important world religion. Since this book is by the world renowned Zoroastrianism expert Mary Boyce, this book is sure to be accurate and filled with indisputable and expert information. I recommend this for any Iranologist, Historian of Religion, Iranian Studies student, Or a very curious reader who wants to expand their knowledge. This book pairs well with other of Mary Boyce's works (like 'Zoroastrians: Their beliefs and practices' or 'Zoroastrianism: It's antiquity and constant vigour'). One of the definitive resources for the study of Zoroastrianism.
This book is a real gem as is the whole series. Series editor John Hinnels, himself an expert on Zoroastrianism he wrote Zorastrians in Britain, has done a good job of getting many experts to put together the most important sources on the world religions. In this one Mary Boyce, the authority on Zoroastrianism and Professor emeritus at the University of London gives us some basic sources. Anyone studying Zoroastrianism knows that new editions of the primary sources dont come out very often. This book contains only selections of the Avesta, Vendidad and other works unfortunately. However, it does contain many other sources including works from Herodutos, Strabo and my personal favorite a newspaper report of the new Atash Bahram in Bombay dated 1897. This is essential for anyone with an interest in the subject.
This is a great book if you want to learn how certian concept of Zoroastrian faith emerged on Judism, Christianity and Islam; such as, after life, how Auhra Mazda judges people, and good people will be able to pass a bridge and wrong doers will fall off the bridge. There was one point that Zoroastrian did not share with other faith which was fasting.Last, fire means justice, and Zoroastrian people do not worship fire, as a matter of fact they worship just one God, and call their God Ahura Mazda which means the Wise Lord.The book briefly discussed how Zoroastrian faith shaped ancient political system in Iran.It is a nice book to read and have fun.
This is very helpful presentation of representative texts designed for the student interested in gathering basic research information about the religion. The information is not presented in an especially interesting way; Boyce's prose introduction to each piece, and the translations themselves, are straightforward but not florid. The project might be improved by a more approachable and energetic translator, though it seems clear that this presentation offers a precision of terms and clarity not easily matched.
If you are interested in the pure message of Zoroaster, this and many other interpretations of the religion are misleading.They deal generally with the traditional aspect of the religion as we know it today, which is really a mixture of many religious philosophies and practices which appeared before and after Zoroaster, such as Mithraism, Maniism, Mazdakism, Christianity which itself has derived many of it's traditions and concepts like Christmas, "son of god", Easter, etc. from Mithraism and other Iranian religions.We can conclude that Zoroastrianism in Iran stayed true to Zoroaster's message only through the Achaemenid dynasty, ended by Alexander's invasion of Iran around 300 BC. One major contributor was Alexander's destruction of the royal library at Persepolis which contained the only written text on Zoroastrianism.After 70 years of Macedonian rule, the Parthians (Iranian dynasty) started recollecting as much as they could to go back to their Zoroastrian roots, but they were not able to separate the true Zoroastrianism from other competing religions of the time.The truth about Zoroaster's briliant and thought provoking message lies in the 17 simple chapters of Gatha, which is the only direct work of Zoroaster, in existence. His message was about human individuality, equality, truth, unification with the natural order, morality and, in fact, anti organized religion, which he viewed as root of greed and wrong doing in the world around him.So after reading this and other books about Zoroaster and Zoroastrianism, please pick up the Gatha of Zoroaster and read it. It is available in many languages on-line, for free. And for further understanding, refer to a book called "Zarathustra" by Jalaledin Ashtiani.
