Thank you, Dr Brill!In August 2016 my long over due blood work indicated my overall cholesterol number was a frightening 243. My high blood pressure and high cholesterol substantially increased my risk of stroke, and I panicked over possibly being prescribed side effect riddled statin drugs. I searched on books for natural, medication-free ways to lower my cholesterol and found Dr Janet Bond Brill's 'Cholesterol Down.' I had just turned 60 so I will admit that I was skeptical that it was possible to erase with any plan years of unhealthy eating, weight gain, lack of exercise and family history of heart disease. What made me choose to try 'Cholesterol Down' was that the author set up simple-to-follow daily guidelines. The recommended foods, like apples, almonds, beans, etc and supplements were easy to add to my daily life. With nothing to lose, except my high cholesterol number, I purchased the book and began to follow the program.And I am so glad I did! Cholesterol Down really worked for me! My total cholesterol number went from a high 243 down to 157!Here is what I did over the course of five months beginning in August 2016. I ate oatmeal and added flax seed, oat bran and a tablespoon of organic granola for breakfast. Lunch was a large delicious apple and almonds. If I needed a snack to crunch on I went with additional organic raw almonds or cut vegetables. Dinner always included a large salad loaded with fresh vegetables, blueberries, strawberries, garbanzo beans, walnuts, almonds, and a drizzle of light balsamic vinaigrette. Salmon, lean chicken, quinoa were added to my dinner diet. I substituted filling whole grain breads for less healthy bread options. I never felt hungry, and that is really saying something since menopause always made me want to snack! I began adding the supplements, especially the fiber, slowly as recommended by the author and drank lots of water, so I had no problems tolerating any recommended supplements. I did not use any soy products, since I have a breast cancer history. I cooked more with garlic, but did not use the aged garlic supplement every day. I was not able to find any of the plant stenol juice or milk that the author recommended-they are discontinued by Smart Balance and Minute Maid-so I relied solely on Benacol for all plant stenol additions. And I walked 5-6 days a week, my 30 minutes bumping up to 60+ minutes. I lost 25 pounds, went from size 14 to size 8 and I feel great!My doctor was so impressed with my numbers that she wrote down the name of the book to check it out herself. The best part for me is that I know I am more healthy, both inside and outside, than I have been in a decade! My good cholesterol is up and my bad cholesterol is down! I plan to make Cholesterol Down a permanent lifestyle choice for me. I can not recommend this book enough!

Had my blood work done Sept, 2013, results as followed:Total Cholesterol-231HDL-78LDL-131Triglycerides-108Read the book, made a list of the 10 guidelines, taped it to the wall near the kitchen sink, tweaked it to my liking.Ate steel cut oatmeal with chia or flaxseed, wheat germ, oat bran most mornings. (I made a week's supply at once and refrigerated, then reheated adding some kind of berries or bananas.)Took 2 tabs of Cholest-off daily (phytosterols)Took 2 tabs of organic Flaxseed oil dailyAte almonds or an apple (or both) as a snack sometime during the dayAte more spinach and mushrooms and garlic and veggies,(beets and cabbage clean the system)Ate more beans (not so great with that)Ate much less meat and dairy (which I had previously done, with little positive results)Drank a soy latte or some kind of soy shake (non GMO)..delicious!!!(not every day)Continued eating the dark chocolate I have always indulged inTook a garlic supplement (not every day)Took "Super Thisilyn" for 3 weeks (figured it would help my liver recover from whatever damage I have done).I added this little "secret weapon" of my own.For the life of me, could not tolerate the psyllium huskContinued to exercise, (either walk or zumba or pilates) about 3 times a weekJust received my new lab results, drawn March 2014 (6 months later), as followed:Total Cholesterol-186HDL-78LDL-94Triglycerides-69My 60th birthday is in 2 months. I have a terrible family history. My father died from a stroke and early heart disease. My brother had a severe stroke at age 54. Some of the contributors to this book wrote really good essays that I much enjoyed. Overall, this was a really good book.
Love this book, especially how it takes on superstitious nonsense within our own country. Religious beliefs have no place in government, education, science or any other facet of people's lives. If you want to live in the first century AD., that's up to you! People at that stage of development actually thought the world was flat - disease was brought on by a god of love. Governments were ruled by religion and death! In fact, if weren't for all the stupid superstitions brought on by religion - this world would probably have had the airplane by 1400 AD. Quantum science would have been well advanced and space exploration would have been as common as an airplane trip.People who really want to advance and leave something behind for their children - must exit all unproven nonsense and start to live in reality. Education without nonsense is the only way to understand this planet and progress to the universe. (Carl Sagan and other great thinkers had it right) life is in front of us not back to the dark ages of the 1st century AD. I live life in reality, knowing that some day I shall return to the dust of the universe. My understanding of this fact, makes me enjoy each and every day that I have on this planet (without superstitious nonsense). Religious beliefs kill people - just look around and think about the aids situation in Africa and the ban on contraceptive. I could list a so many things that backward thinking has done in the last 3,000 years, however, it's not worth my time. People need to start using that 3 pounds of gray matter between their ears and stop listening to some greedy preacher out there telling them absolute nonsense.. Read real books and not fairy tells that people force on you as children. THINK!

If you only own one book for the rest of your life, this is the one for you on atheism. Names and Authors you should have at the ready. Arguments and answers understood. Go for it.
nice but nothing new
The articles are a bit uneven--both in style and in value--as one might expect in a compilation such as this. Still, I found at least 90% of the contributions to be very lively and enlightening. Some are terse and didactic, others replete with philosophical jargon, yet others very personal and almost conversational.In short, this volume is an excellent companion to Christopher Hitchen's "the Portable Atheist."
Different viewpoints, different personal experiences and reasoning with a single shared conclusion: religions are a blend of the supernatural, superstition and mythology and have impeded the advance of inquiry and human intellectual development for in excess of 1000 years.
This is a very refreshing and stimulating book for three reasons. First, It was written by 50 authors - some philosophers, some physical scientists, some biologists, some science writers and some journalists. The diversity of the authors' backgrounds provided an exhilarating multiview of the subject, the non-existence of god. Secondly, the individual contributions were written in short, precise, and lucid styles. The reader has many articles from which to choose his personal favourites. I like Stephen Law's bold assertion that one can easily prove the non-existence of god; and he did so in fine surgical manner, cutting away the assertions of god's existence. Adele Mercier's critical analysis of the first and second orders of belief was fascinating, pointedly stating that 'most people who claim to have religious beliefs have scarcely ever analysed the contents of their belief, and indeed are reluctant to do so, even when prompted.' She explained that the belief in the existence of god is a first order belief; the belief that one's belief in god is a second order belief. She employed the two orders of belief to explain persuasively why theists always end up with non-answers when questioned about their god. Victor Stenger exposed the ignorance of science of some Christian apologists such as Michael Craig; and in the case of Craig, a stubborn persistance in repeating a false claim even when proven wrong (see pg.113) Some of the authors like Tamas Pataki injected a bit of their personal experience and early introduction to religion, explaining how their came to reject the belief in god. The third reason I found this book to be refreshing is that none of the 50 voices came from either Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett, or Sam Harris. This is a very handy book for atheists, born-again atheists, and people wishing to learn more before they accept or reject the belief in god.

The first questions likely to occur to the experienced shooter contemplating adding a replica percussion revolver to his collection are "Do any of the makers of replicas turn out firearms of decent quality?" and "Would it be worth all the fiddling with measuring, loading, capping and cleaning?" Cumpston and Bates address both of these issues in sufficient depth to satisfy the reader on both issues. (Yes, there are good quality replicas to be had, and there is, indeed, a good deal to be done in preparing a percussion revolver for action and keeping it functionally clean through an extended shooting session.) Cleaning is especially an issue for those using black powder, the residues of which are copious, corrosive and hard to remove. Fortunately, there are modern alternatives that are less troublesome.Readers undetered by those considerations are provided a survey of the major designs and models of cap-and-ball revolvers, detailing the good and bad characteristics of both both the originals and their modern counterparts. Detailed information is included on black powder and alternative loads, projectile performance and ballistics.The authors wrote Amazon reviews for the book declaring it stillborn because of some proofreading issues--notably repeated misspellings of the name of the Starr revolver. In fact the book is in stock on Amazon and well worth its price, typos and all.
Mike Cumpston and Johnny Bates have taken on the task of sharing the how-tos, and what-abouts of classic 19th century arms, and they do a fine job of it.Things start off with an overview on the loading procedure followed by a quick discussion of the various historical bullet types with their positives and negatives laid out. Then the authors get to the meat and potatoes.The book is sectioned into chapters covering three historical periods to provide the reader a sense of perspective on the development of the various handguns discussed in each chapter. The history and development of each model is followed by a shooter's review of the pistol's ballistic performance, and disassembly instructions.I heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in the revolvers of the true "Old West". (That's before the Colt .45 "Peacemaker", y'all) The historical information is well presented, and the shooting reviews give the reader an excellent feel for what these pistols were capable of. The color photographs in this edition are a huge improvement over a prior version published some years ago.An excellent choice for experienced shooters and newcomers alike. You'll never watch "The Outlaw Josey Wales" or "Quigley Down Under" the same way after reading this book.
.…but I'd like more information, somehow, (the photographs are generally very good but I wouldn't mind more of them- and some diagrams as well).Lots of history and even more test firing info and gun reviews including the author's opinions on who makes the best powder to shoot with. The book is copyrighted 2014 but, some earlier reviews seem, to me, to indicate that they had publishing difficulties- a few bits in the text make me think it was written as early as 2006. No matter, still the book to own if you have any interest in the subject. It even covers the subjects of making repairs and/or improving your revolvers function.The author's gave instructions on making paper cartridges in their book "Percussion Pistols and Revolvers"- that information is repeated here and might even be expanded upon a bit.Italian gunmaker Uberti gets favorable mention in the text but their website (their name .com, no longer lists some reviewed items, still good to read just in case you're able to buy those pieces somewhere) isn't listed in resources.Cimarron Firearms is listed but their website is not, easy enough to "Google"… I'd guess most of the companies have sites that can be found that way.
This is by far the best book I have read about cap and ball revolvers. It gets a little technical at times but it is good that it does. The author also gives lists of references and order houses for parts, complete guns and components for shooting. This is a fantastic reference manual plus a great read.
I highly recommend this book. I have bought several versions. They were all good and very informative. This latest version is really nicely done with color photos. The authors clearly have extensive knowledge of cap and ball revolvers, from their mechanics to their history. They are pretty darn good shots to boot. Some of the historical data I have never seen elsewhere. I have a fairly complete library on early Colt revolvers. Yet I refer to this book often. I have over a dozen cap and ball revolvers that I shoot fairly regularly. The authors are right on in the advice they provide shooters. My experience differs a bit in that I typically shoot multiple cylinders without the need to clean each time as they suggest. However, with the cheaper reproductions this might be necessary. Its not with Uberti and Ruger revolvers. I also don't see the need to waste caps drying out oil soaked nipples: don't flood the nipples and chambers with oil in the first place.
If you are interested in black powder firearms and the history of them, then this book is for you. It gives firearm details, history how they were made, and who used them. Great book for black powder shooters.
This is a superb introduction to percussion revolvers. I learned quite a bit from every page. The photos are excellent. It even is printed on very high quality paper. As another reviewer noted, Cumpston and Bates really want the reader to learn and become proficient. It is very much worth buying and reading

This was an exceptionally well written and captivating book.
I thought about preaching through Jeremiah once. Then I tried to outline it. I decided I would postpone that Jeremiah series for a time when it made a little more sense. After reading A Mouth Full of Fire: The Word of God in the words of Jeremiah, I might be a little closer to a Jeremiah series.Andrew Shead attempts to unify the book of Jeremiah around the central theme of "the word of the Lord". Shead believes that it is best described as "the story of what happened when the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah". And as we listen to this story it helps us shape our own doctrine of the word of God. This book, then, serves as both a discussion on Jeremiah and a discussion on the doctrine of the word of God.The book begins with an attempt to defend his thesis and outline the suitability of Jeremiah to give us a solid theology of the word of God. He then goes about structuring Jeremiah. After engaging in these introductory matters, Shead, then shows how his argument bears on our doctrine of the Word. He looks at the Word and speaker, Word and hearers, Word and power, and finally the Word and permanence. He closes the book with a "conversation" with Karl Barth.My TakeI got a great deal out of this book. It helped me to think through Jeremiah and read it more cogently. Furthermore, Shead does a great job of defending his thesis. I'm convinced that he is correct in his theme of Jeremiah. If I ever do preach through Jeremiah I will be sure to go back to Shead and structure the book accordingly.What is most helpful in this book, in my opinion, is the distinction that is made between "word" and "words". His chapter on The Word and Speaker was very beneficial to me. I write and speak the Word frequently. His statement that, "a prophet is made by God into a word-shaped person" hauntingly shows that you really cannot separate the messenger from the message.Should You Buy It?The book will not be for everyone. It is written in the middle of a scholarly discussion on the nature of the word of God. If you aren't already introduced into that conversation it might be a little difficult to get brought up to speed. However, the book is not so pedantic that a casual reader couldn't pick it up and benefit.Those most likely to benefit from this book would be someone that is studying the doctrine of the word of God. This needs to be part of that study. Furthermore, someone attempting to study or preach through Jeremiah would benefit greatly by giving this book at least a perusal. Shead helps outline Jeremiah in a way that I haven't really seen before. It is profoundly helpful if given to the right audience.

(Jeremiah 5:14)Shead argues that in the book of Jeremiah, the vocabulary of "word" and "words" is a literary and theological blueprint to give the book's final form its narrative and theological shape. It is not Jeremiah, but the phrase "the word of the Lord", who is the main character in the book of Jeremiah. Shead's Structure offers a great outline of Jeremiah (this is seen in ch 2 'Structuring Jeremiah', but is relayed in the following chapters 3-6).The NSBT series believes there is an inner unity to the Old and New Testaments and works to synthesize the whole-Bible's teaching on the God we worship. "Biblical theology…may be defined as knowledge of God as God in the Bible" (pg. 28). The Bible is one which reveals God in such a way that we may in fact know Him, His character, and His Son, the Word.(+) Shead's exegesis is excellent. Shead's outline and structure of Jeremiah gives way to pages and pages of note-taking (hopefully in your Bible too!). He provides us with a movie director's perspective, and how the camera draws into Jeremiah's character, and out to show him as an incidental character caught up with the rest of Judah in the destructive power of the Word of God. This was the best part of the book (in my opinion).(-) While exegesis was gold and alluring, theological discussions were bewildering. Considering this is a book from a pretty academic series, I can't come down hard on Shead. It's not his fault I'm not smart enough to understand. But whether talking about ‘speech’ in the divine agency debate, Goldingay's 'model of scripture' as inspired word, or the difference between prophetic speech and a prophetic book (to name a few), I didn't always know if Shead agreed with an opposing position or not. And whether or not he did, I didn't know why it mattered in the end.(-) The section on Barth was interesting, but still confusing. If you've read Barth, or have some knowledge on 'word' theology, this will make more sense to you. While there was gold to be found, I had trouble with the overall idea flowing through and the concepts discussed. Thankfully, Shead doesn't present Barth as the enemy.If you're studying Jeremiah and you want a bigger picture of Jeremiah, his structure, and his portrayal of the power and place of God's word, read Shead.
