As an interpreter myself (fluent in ASL & English) and having grown up in a family of Hearing, Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, and Deaf-Blind people, I can say that this book gets my seal of approval. I give this routinely as a baby shower gift.WHY I LIKE IT:As a product of the world's only Deaf University & their publishing affiliate, it is a trustworthy resource to find CORRECT and reliable sign vocabulary. It also comes with a free DVD of video showing EVERY sign that's within the book; considering the language is a visual one in which the drawings are not always sufficiently clear, such video is vital (and googling the word when you don't know the language could lead you to signing very incorrect things, thus the source reliability here is so key). Additionally, you're supporting Deaf people, their culture, & their university by buying these materials versus someone who potentially learned second-hand, has no knowledge of Deaf Culture, & may know very little about the roots of the language which sadly many "baby sign" books for within this category.Best of luck and any further material by Gallaudet Press or Dawn Sign Press (an unrelated but equally reliable Deaf & ASL only content publisher) would be highly recommended by me over others.
As a parent of two deaf children who were adopted we have been looking for ways to teach them ASL. The issue is many of them a based on prior learning. Our two adopted children had received NO learning in their home country. Everything was new... Colors, Numbers, Fruit names etc...This book was what we were needing! I highly recommend this for EVERYONE who is interested in learning or teaching ASL!
My husband is Deaf and I am training to become an ASL interpreter. So far, the dictionary is incredible! This book is helpful for deaf and hearing children alike. The introduction is for adults, and I love that it explains fingerspelling, iconic signs, and the fact that there are sign variations. The DVD is great in that there are children demonstrating the signs, adults signing sentences, and that is shows synonyms. I am sure many hearing people assume that every English work has an equivalent sign, when really there could be a sign that covers several English words or concepts. It's explained perfectly in the book, as well as debunking the myth that ASL is just "making pictures in the air." Nope!My only issue is the DVD format. When I select a word and watch how it is signed, I cannot go to the next word in the list. I have to go back to the main screen that shows the English alphabet, click the letter, and then go to the word I want. I would have been much happier if I could go from word to word in the list, or arrow back to the same letter. I guess that will be an improvement for the next edition.This ASL dictionary is going to be a gift for our young hearing nieces. My husband and I will be visiting them soon, and hope that this dictionary and DVD are helpful tools in teaching them ASL, until we can live closer to them.
This is good not only for children but for adults learning ASL One word may have more than one sign and one sign may mean more than one thing and this book shows you about each. Really like this book. Hard cover and a large book.

My order arrived right on time! The book itself is wonderful. It includes colorful pictures, clear hand signs, and a wide range of vocab. I find myself referencing this book all the time. I was worried initially that the words would be too "childish" since it is the children's guide. However, it includes useful, diverse words helpful for any age.
For those of you that may not know, all ASL sign language books are not created equal & Galludet is the premier ( if not the only ) college in the US for the deaf & hard of hearing. This is the best book for learning sign language. In my opinion & podcasts I’ve watched to learn ASL, this is the most accurate. 👌
Not quite what I hoped. Trouble is, there are too many variations these days, from LifePrint on web to dictionaries to tutors. Since my daughter and grandkids are learning it faster than the rest of us, I defer to whatever they settle on, as they put the research into it. Learn your letters!--that helps so much.

This was a very thorough description of the prep and trip to Plymouth including background on passengers. I learned much more than expected. There was actually too much detail for me, but this is a comment more than criticism.
I used this book as a reference for a lesson I was writing on Thanksgiving. It was informative and an easy read. I learned a lot about the background of the boats used and of the first winter the pilgrims endured after landing.
That's it. Probably factual, but annoyingly repetitive and boring.

I would have preferred that the anecdotes were replaced with more information on how to do something, particularly as the book progressed. It looked like it was building towards how to get a virtual assistant involved in taking some of your work, but it never got there.
At a stage where I am becoming time poor, this book gave some insight on managing tasks and day to day activities, as well as being able to automate or delegate mundane activities.I woulld recommend this book to friends and peers that are becoming overwhelmed with life.
