About the Author

An acclaimed textile designer, author, artist, and photographer, Alice Starmore is a native of Scotland's Isle of Lewis. Starmore has taught and lectured extensively throughout Britain, Europe, and the United States. She has written 16 books and countless magazine articles, and her classic Book of Fair Isle Knitting is the work that introduced Americans to the popular traditional technique. 4 Questions with Alice Starmore: An Exclusive Dover Interview Alice Starmore has a fascinating tale to tell. We spoke to the author of the #1 crafts bestseller Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting about her knitting background, professional start, and more. Clearly, knitting is a deeply ingrained facet of the culture of Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Did your mother teach you to knit? My mother taught me to knit when I was very young. She was a dressmaker as well as a knitter and our house was a place of constant creativity. I was also born at a time when most women knitted as a matter of course, and I had three aunts who had been fisher girls in their youth and were experts at making traditional fishermen's gansies. I understand that your first language is Gaelic — do you still speak it?Yes I still speak Gaelic. The Isle of Lewis, where I live, is in the Outer Hebrides — the heartland of Gaelic and the only place where you will hear the language in everyday use.How did you get your start professionally?I designed a small collection of knitwear in 1975 and successfully sold it in London boutiques. It was featured in a national newspaper and from that small beginning my knitting career evolved in ways that were quite unimaginable to me when I began. Your books are known and loved around the world, and you've adapted design elements from the textile arts of many countries into your repertoire. Are you still discovering "new" aspects of knitting and fabric arts from other cultures?I am interested in everything. I find inspiration in all aspects of the world around me. There is enough inspiration in the natural world on my doorstep to last many lifetimes. I am also inspired by art, culture, history, science and music. My own culture features widely in my design work but I have always been interested in other cultures and in other places. My main problem is that I cannot possibly live long enough to produce work from the amount of ideas that come into my head.

Thankfully, I read many of the reviews prior to purchase. Then I knew to not to be surprised by some of the flaws. Only her yarns are used, so you have to do your homework if you decided not to use them. Many use smaller needlesOne review mentioned possible errors in the charts-I just got the book, & have not started a project yet, so I cannot speak on that. Another review mentioned she comes across as arrogant. In spots, I can see that.HOWEVER, that being said, I can see the good qualities in the book as well. I hope to learn Aran style knitting, and believe the charts (if they are actually accurate), would be a good resource. I personally happen to also like the patterns included (about 9), as well as the photographs. I enjoy that she tried to research the history. In spots, you have charts and text patterns.I look forward to trying my hand at the patterns as I improve my knitting.

Outstanding Book for Authentic Aran Sweater Knitting! Yes, I did buy her yarns, both in Bainin and her Hebrides 3-Ply. I hate to say this to any naysayers on her yarn, BUT! Her yarns are exquisite! The Hebrides 3-Ply color choices are beautiful. Many actually change overall colors due to ambiant lighting. They hold the cable designs perfectly. I have fallen in love with the yarns and free shipping to US via Royal Mail. I live in Alaska! To get yarns so quickly! I receive the yarns within 2 weeks beautifully wrapped. I am working on two sweaters right now: " Na Craga", her cover sweater in the color she chose- Selkie. The other sweater, knit in Baini yarn color Culmor, a purple, pattern is "St Kilda", from her book, "In the Hebrides" that is also chock full of stunning designs! I have the original hardbound book of Aran Knitting that was released in the 90s. For me, to have an exact sweater made of her outstanding unique yarns from the Hebrides is a priceless feeling. Her yarns are hand dyed and dried outdoors. Her website goes into the process. Waiting for a particular shade that is out of stock IS worth waiting for. It is another reason I find her yarn so precious. This book is a beautiful educational book that shares so much history and technique. Some reviewers have stated she is smug or full of herself. She might be. BUT.....she IS a legend and history will be kind to her with her body of exceptional work in knitting, needlepoint and more. For anyone who doubts buying her yarn....just try it. I showed my husband swatches of her yarns last night. For a man who has seen me knitting for decades and has been blasé about looking at yarns in the past, this time he took time feeling and looking at the choices. In the past with other yarns, he could care less. His reaction last night confirmed my suspicions. To even a novice, her designs and sweaters ARE exceptional. Buy the book. Order some swatches. Watch the magic from your needles. Enjoy!

The patterns are so lovely, I can hardly wait to knit some of them. There are several problems, though. The first is the big one, that of the amounts of yarn required. No yardage or yarn size per pattern is given. The only yarns used are the author's own, with ounces required per pattern being the only measurement. I had to go to her website and hunt to find yards per ounce. Of course, if her yarns were not so expensive, this wouldn't be a problem, as everybody could just use her yarns. The website refers to the prices as "affordable" and competitive with other yarns of equal quality, but they are neither. I use good-to-very-good-quality wool yarns, but can't afford to pay over $100 for the yarn for one sweater. Besides which, her skeins are small, so it would take 16 of them for one sweater, for example - that's a lot of yarn junctions to deal with! I really think it would be helpful if the yarn yardages required were listed in the book. She might not want her sweaters made with any other yarn, but realistically, people will do that, and she could be more helpful. She could include a disclaimer, if she felt she needed to. Another problem is that none of the patterns in this book are appropriate for someone who is not already a competent cables knitter. She gives all the instructions needed, but the idea of the pattern on the front cover being suitable for a cables beginner (as stated in the book) is absurd. I will practice on other items until I think I am competent enough to do her patterns, but it won't be soon. I would not recommend this book to anybody who isn't already an experienced cables knitter. I'd have preferred more patterns and less history (50 pages!), also.

Ah, the original! Commands breath-taking prices on Amazon and other sites. Knitters everywhere cheered when they heard this precious volume would be reprinted. Not just re-printed, republished in a new edition. Many if not most of the sweaters were re-photographed- and once again, the photos are gorgeous. The beginning part on the history of Aran knitting has a retrospective that may, or may not, add to your knitting experience. The one additional project is a decidedly non-Aran cardigan with set-in sleeves and waist shaping. It is lovely and I may make it for myself. That's not to say the book is perfect. What I didn't like about it (why I gave it 4 in place of 5) stars:1) the new introduction is a bit too smug for me. Not only that, the author lays claim to an anchor cable pattern- and criticizes others for using it. Yet I found the same cable pattern in a much older (predating the first edition of Aran Knitting) stitch dictionary.2) the format is smaller than the original, so the charts are smaller too. The binding makes me afraid to lay it flat enough to enlarge the charts. The hard-bound book with sewn pages can lie flat enough to scan or photocopy.3) the most beautiful sweater, the new one, comes in the most limited sizes. The largest size would fit my size 4 daughter. Most knitters will look, sigh, and knit elsewhere.Summary: if you are a knitter, you need this book on your shelf.

I love this book! It was everything I expected! I haven't done color by numbers since I was a kid(I'm 66) and have a hard time choosing my colors. This book is perfect for that, plus it has a variety of dragons!

This is not an adult coloring book as it states on the outside. Every picture is very small (only takes up half of the available paper) and is very simple overall. I love doing color by numbers and this not a challenging book by any means. It takes 10-15 minutes to color each one in. I bought this before there was a "look inside" option, so I wasn't able to see what it would be like. If you are looking for a challenging, adult color-by-number, this is not a good choice.

I ordered this book for my adult son for Christmas and he was thrilled

Like detail but small pics. Disappointed. Could have been great.

It s not an adult book

Wife wanted this, she was very disappointed with this. The images are small and this should be considered for kids like 10 or 12, not adult. The picture takes up about 1/3 the page, the numbers are colored cirlces take up another 1/3. It was a waste of money. Suppose will give it to my 4 yr old grandson.

The book that you get is not even the same book that you see here. Every picture is very small and is very simple overall. It takes 10-15 minutes to color each one in. Extremely simple. More of a headache than a stress reliever. I do not recommend this book at all. However I suppose the publishing company tries to make up for it by giving you two exact copies of the same book with in the same binding. Still not recommended whatsoever.

Hold Up the Sky: And Other Native American Tales from Texas and the Southern Plains, by Jane Louise Curry

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-This collection of 26 Native American tales is similar in format to the author's Back in the Beforetime: Tales of the California Indians (1987), Turtle Island: Tales of the Algonquian Nations (1999), and The Wonderful Sky Boat and Other Native American Tales of the Southeast (2001, all McElderry). In an introduction about the tribes of the area, the author explains that the stories of most of the earliest peoples in the region were lost when their cultures were destroyed by invading European colonists. The Texas farming tribes of the Tonkawan and Caddoan language groups survived to tell their tales to collectors, as did the Comanche, Kiowa, Lipan Apache, and Kiowa-Apache hunters who followed the buffalo from the north and west into the Southern Plains, and the Osage who were forced west by white settlers. As it is in the author's earlier collections, the retellings are simple, straightforward, and often humorous. They vary in length from 2 to 13 pages and include creation legends, pourquoi stories, and trickster tales. Coyote is a major character in many of them, and he is sometimes outwitted by a smaller animal. Many of the stories are accompanied by a full-page, black-and-white drawing. The tribes from which they come are described in short entries in the afterword and "About the Stories" lists Curry's sources. This collection will appeal especially to storytellers searching for new material and to teachers and students of Native American folklore.Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-7. Curry retells 26 tales from 14 different tribes whose traditional lands were in the southern plains and Texas. A brief introduction touches on the cultural changes that took place among the tribes after the Spaniards, and later the white settlements, pushed westward. Passed down orally until the late 1800s, the stories were recorded by missionaries, travelers, and scholars. The tales range in accessibility, appeal, and tone; some are humorous, some cautionary, some adventurous. A few are all that remain of tribes destroyed by war, disease, and displacement. Perfect for classroom units on Native Americans or folktales, many of these selections, with their easy narrative styles, will lend themselves to reader's theater. The simple black-and-white line drawings add little to the text, but brief appended information about the tribes and sources notes will be helpful. Karen HuttCopyright © American Library Association.
