Grade 4-6-This collection of 26 Native American tales is similar in format to the author's Back in the Beforetime: Tales of the California Indians (1987), Turtle Island: Tales of the Algonquian Nations (1999), and The Wonderful Sky Boat and Other Native American Tales of the Southeast (2001, all McElderry). In an introduction about the tribes of the area, the author explains that the stories of most of the earliest peoples in the region were lost when their cultures were destroyed by invading European colonists. The Texas farming tribes of the Tonkawan and Caddoan language groups survived to tell their tales to collectors, as did the Comanche, Kiowa, Lipan Apache, and Kiowa-Apache hunters who followed the buffalo from the north and west into the Southern Plains, and the Osage who were forced west by white settlers. As it is in the author's earlier collections, the retellings are simple, straightforward, and often humorous. They vary in length from 2 to 13 pages and include creation legends, pourquoi stories, and trickster tales. Coyote is a major character in many of them, and he is sometimes outwitted by a smaller animal. Many of the stories are accompanied by a full-page, black-and-white drawing. The tribes from which they come are described in short entries in the afterword and "About the Stories" lists Curry's sources. I grew up in Salt Lake City, but haven't lived there since 1986. My home was 15 minutes walking distance from central downtown, so I knew "old Salt Lake City" quite well. I could have added a couple of dozen things to do in addition to this list. But this list is mainly for "new Salt Lake City." I remember when the original Salt Lake City Library was on state street, before the building was turned into the first Planetarium (the Hanson Planetarium). I can tell you where all kinds of private cemeteries are located throughout the city (where lots of famous old Mormons are buried). I remember when Trolley Square was the place where all the city buses were housed and repaired. Funny how the old city changed.But on to this nice bucket list. While most of the activities do concentrate on activities IN Salt Lake City, many of these activities are things that you will have to travel up to an hour outside of Salt Lake City. Lagoon, is larger than most 6-flag amusement parks, but it is close to 45 minutes from downtown Salt Lake. Maddox has always been a great place to get a steak, but count on at least an hour's trip. I remember my first visit to Maddox when I was a teenager, I started to order a "chicken dinner" and my parents looked at me as though I was a heretic. Only dim-witted people ordered anything other than beef at Maddox.What held my interest were all the things to do in "new Salt Lake City." After the Library left its Carnegie Building for a new multi-level complex just across from the City and County Building, I spent hours there, but I understand there is an even larger more beautiful building than I knew. The eateries, the play houses, the new/old movie theaters (one that I used to frequent isn't listed, so I guess it went out of business), concerts, sports events, even baseball (I guess they don't call it Derk's Field anymore) are there: some new, some renamed, some still as they were.This is one of those wonderful guides that I want to keep around next time I visit my family in Salt Lake City
As Salt Lake aficionados ourselves, this book is an excellent compilation of things to do for the visitor and resident alike. Well researched, this book mentions almost all the things we love about Salt Lake. Food-wise, missing things are Ruby Snap cookies, borscht and pastrami at Feldman's Deli and neapolitan pizza at the original Settebello's. Garden-wise, Cactus and Tropicals and The Garden Store on 700 east are both must sees! Best shop is hands down Tabula Rasa in Trolley Square. Enjoy!
I grew up in Salt Lake and gave this book to my mother who has lived in Utah for 30+ years. Some of the destinations are obvious (i.e. temple square) but many of the others are hidden gems. I gave it to my mom and her new boyfriend for date-night ideas and activities. My only complaint is it's a little outdated. For example, one of the items is to go to Training Table but they closed in December of 2015.
Love this book. We've turned it into a thing to do over the next year making a few off the list everyday. We have lived here our entire lives and haven't done half of the things in this book. Even things we have done in the past we have decided to do all over again seeing how much we can cover over 356.
Awesomely well written. Funny and witty guide to tons of cool stuff to do that I never knew were available... and I grew up there.
Too concentrated on food and drink. There must be better thinks to do in SLC.

I was looking forward to reading this book because of the stories and experiences I knew Delilah was likely to share. I was not disappointed. From small town life as a part of a very intense family, to her rising through the ranks while working in radio and then outlining her humanitarian work as she also balanced her work, family and the devastating loss of two children, Delilah's words are inspiring and engaging. On one level it is an easy read, yet, it is also deep and thought-provoking...a book that might need to be read a few times before processing all it has to offer. It covers her love for God, family, and people and fairly projects the woman behind the voice America has come to know, trust and love. She says the book is "just a handful of stories" and that "there are plenty more where these came from." Here's hoping she's willing to share more of those stories and insights in her next book. She asked, just before going to Ghana for the first time, "But I'm just one person, what can one person do?" I think Delilah found her answer and offers that challenge to all of us: "One person can change the world--one heart at a time." She inspires me to be one person "with a heart to change the world for one person, or many" and to consider that the people I encounter in my path may have been placed there for a purpose.
Page 22 last paragraph I cried too! My favorite memory other than Zach is when Delilah tells the Radio Producer with all the statistical information to shove it with a tampon on the desk. That's grit and authenticity. Bet he wishes he never presented those stats and still had her on his radio! Look at her now! I also loved the history in the book of her family and forgiveness. I can't recommend a better book. I enjoyed the pictures. It truly is One Heart at a Time effort! Love her...just simply love Delilah!

The length of pages were few, but the storyline made up for it. The characters were relatable and engaging. The romance was sweet and tender. It was great to see Hannah's growth and her determination to go after her own happiness.On a steaminess level I would rate this a pleasant PG.
I loved this short story. The chemistry between Hannah and Thomas was sweet and real. I loved the setting, Cornwall being one of my favorite locations to read about. I would highly recommend this clean romance!
On the Shores of Tregalwen is a short and sweet novella that can be read in one sitting. The love story is so cute, obviously, but I think Deborah really excels with her descriptions of the scenery. Her writing made it so easy to really feel like I was in Cornwall myself - racing horses on the beach and singing around a bonfire. This novella is a perfect prequel to her upcoming series - it left me happy, but wanting more!
This story moves quickly and engages you the whole time. Never a dull moment. Every page is filled with witty dialogues and anxious anticipation for what will happen next. One you start reading, you won’t want to put it down.
You guys I absolutely loved this one! I snuggled in and read some before bedtime a couple nights ago and then couldn't wait to finish it the following day. Let's just say that I got my Saturday chores done quickly and found some quiet reading time while my kiddos were finishing their chores. Hee Hee! Let's also just say that it was an insanely long week and this book was just what I needed to enjoy and finish off the week with. *breathing calmly*Hannah and Thomas are childhood friends. When Hannah is pulled away from the only home she ever knows, and the comfort of her grandparents and Thomas, she is forced to conform to who her mother wants her to be. I was thinking about Hannah's situation and wondering how easy/hard it would be to stay true to yourself in that type of situation. Not in the sense of doing anything against what you believe, but in not shutting off and withdrawing into yourself, being a shell of who you truly are. I think sometimes everyone has moments like that in their lives. Probably not always to an extreme, but in a small sense of having to conform and act a certain way.Hannah finally gains the courage (maybe fear) to flee London, her mother and society, and return to Cornwall where she was truly happy and loved. Can I just tell you all how much I loved her tenacity. Yet, she had become unsure of herself after trying to make herself someone that her mother would love. This book switches perspective between Hannah and Thomas and I loved seeing what each of the characters were thinking and feeling.Without giving anything away, I will say that Hannah and Thomas have some great chemistry. It may not be 100% accurate for how a couple would act in this time period according to the strictures of society but other than that, it was well done with the time period. Fun and full of charm, humor, sweet and tender moments and a happily ever after!This is a prequel to Deborah Hathaway's upcoming new series based in Cornwall. And if some of the characters that were background characters are the main characters in the upcoming novels, I am super excited to read their stories! Yay!!!Content: Clean. While I am a sucker for a good romance there must be some kind of conflict or tension to keep me interested and I felt like On the Shores of Tregalwen fell flat in this area big time. Hannah and Thomas are childhood friends that have developed more than a friendship as the years have gone by, so when you start the story they're pretty much already in love with each other. Hannah's mother forces her to leave the beautiful shores of Tregalwen for the stuffy London society, which is everything Hannah hates. While in London, Hannah can no longer stand not being where she wants to be, so she runs away back to Tregalwen and back into Thomas's arms.Sugary sweet and hard to swallow is how I would define this novella, to the point to where I skimmed the last few chapters because the outcome is so blatantly obvious that I completely lost interest. The story started off with such promise but it quickly left me wanting more.On that note, I will say that the descriptions of Tregalwen paints a beautiful mind portrait and the writing itself is well done, which makes giving a negative review heartbreaking for me. Still, I refuse to give up on this new series and hope that the next installment will have more intrigue.
The setting in Cornwall drew me into this story. The author’s descriptions of the countryside were easy to visualize, and I can see why Hannah would prefer it to London society. Hannah was a lovable heroine, and the friendship and affection that she and Thomas had for each other was sweet. The characters were well-drawn for a short story. Hannah and Thomas were endearing, and I was glad to see Hannah develop some backbone in dealing with her mother’s manipulations.I would like to have seen a deeper development between Hannah and Thomas as adults. It seemed a bit rushed, even as a novella. The writing is clear and concise, and I’m looking forward to reading more of this author’s work.I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. This was a sweet Recency romance. Hannah and Thomas grew up together, best friends racing horses on the sand and getting into trouble until her mother who abandoned her as a toddler to her grandparents in Cornwall calls her to London for the season. Three years later, Hannah is disenchanted with London, missed her best friend, and her mother has tried to force a betrothal on her, so she runs away back home to Cornwall. There were several miscommunications and misunderstandings between Hannah and Thomas as they each think the other has moved on. I loved the song Thomas sang at the bonfire about "love" traveling far away and coming back home.
