This book caught my eye in a bookstore and I bought it based on the five star reviews. I'm happy with the book, and I collect compilations of other artists' inspirations, and if you love love love Amy Butler, you'll love this book.If you can look at a tote bag and copy it from looking, without a pattern; if you don't need instructions for making a scarf with fringe, and if you prefer tailored wool suits to unfitted sundresses, you might not find this book quite as inspiring as some reviewers did.There is a unified look-and-feel to the chapters, even though they are about different people's work. (Contrast to the variation in the book Fashionable Selby, which plays in the same space.) Not good or bad; simply an "is."It is clearly a book designer's decision to have all text centered, and that is just as clearly a personal peeve of mine. I am older than the target market for this book, and I hate design that makes text harder to read.
I'm really glad I purchased this book on a somewhat unusual impulse. While I was looking for a specific sort of visual inspiration, there's actually a great deal of depth to the written inclusions. I especially enjoy the fact that the writing gives voice to multiple creatives, not just Amy Butler. For me that type of visual collaboration is frequently more inspiring than the immersive quality of a single person's point of view, no matter how talented they may be. Having said that, there's no question that AB is extremely gifted and talented. Her world view of encouraging and maintaining positivity was quite accessible and not a bit preachy or judgemental. Originally I had thought I'd probably flip through this one a few times and then start dismantling it to include images in a variety of process/studio journals. But now I'm clear I will be keeping this one on tact because it's just so much fun to have on hand. "Fun" *plus* a cornerstone of substantive food for thought? What's not to love about that combination for those create as well as those who are an established part of Butler's fan base?
This was not what I expected. I didn't realize it was a collection of magazines bound together. I expected more projects, but most must be ordered separately. It is good for inspiration.
This is exactly what I hoped it would be-- pages of patterns, textures and designs. I use mine for art journals and inspirations.
This is truly one of the most beautiful and inspiring books I have ever experienced. I say "experienced" because just flipping through the pages, I felt as though I was with her on her adventures, seeing what caught her view and ultimately lead to her fabric designs. I feel immediately inspired every time I open this book. Amy is such a kind, loving and wildly creative soul who has tapped into something very special. I am so glad she shared her design process with the world. I can't wait for her next edition.
