This, the first of the Christian Heroes gift sets, is my favorite. I can see why they did these first.I only knew of Hudson Taylor and Corrie Ten Boom by name, and I only vaguely knew the stories. These books filled them in quite well. For adults, of course, you'd probably read The Hiding Place, for Corrie Ten Boom (which I have not yet got to); but I as an adult learned a lot from this book.The other ones in this series I found fascinating. The biography of Nate Saint here in this series is, in my opinion, quite a bit more interesting and detailed than the corresponding biography of Jim Eliot later in the series; it actually explains their death together much better, with a lot more details on the aftermath. Nate Saint is a much more approachable character than Jim Eliot, as well, and my kids definitely enjoyed it more (but they like the Jim Eliot story too).The Gladys Aylward story pretty much blew my mind. I consider it a pretty severe defect in my Christian education that I had not heard this story. Wow. God chooses the most unlikely people.I found myself personally inspired by a number of these stories, even as I read them to the kids.
Bought these books to read to the kids for Family devotions. Started reading them before bed and cant seem to put them down because they inspire and challenge me so much. We know nothing of the hardships these dear saints faced to get the gospel to the masses. Any wonder why satan's minions have taken over our country and stripped away our freedoms! God help us to wake up and live boldly before the trumpet sounds like our brethren did in past generations!
I cannot say enough about Janet and Geoff's Christian Heroes series. They have a gift for condensing these amazing lives into approximately 200 fascinating pages. The series is enjoyable reading for any age, from teenage to senior adult. As I read through the series, it has added a new dimension to my anticipation of Heaven. In addition to everything else that Heaven offers, I cannot wait to meet these exciting Christian Heroes.
My 9 year old son enjoyed reading these books. He is a very advanced reader, so I'm not positive of the best age for these books. I have a hard time getting books that are appropriate for a 9 year old, but aren't written too simply for his advanced reading skills ( highschool/college level)
My 12 year old got some of these books from the school's library here in Chad, Africa and books of this series have been top of her wish list ever since. If she is not listening to "Down Gilead Lane" she is surely reading one of these books. Truly inspiring!
This is a great book set for the whole family. We bought it so we could teach our children about church history and about heroes in the faith. It is easy to read and well written. Our 12 yr old daughter likes the books very much and it's building her faith!
Love these books, a great read for children. I bought them for my 9 year old son and ended up reading them as well.
Beyond happy with these engaging books - my 11 year old daughter didn't put them down until she finished all five! Highly recommend! =)
