Grace is one of my favorite Carolyn Brown heroines. She isn't beautiful, graceful, or endowed with all the little womanly ways that men looked for in the late 1800s. Instead she is stubborn, opinionated, and a bit of a tomboy. She is also not in a hurry to get married, even though at 20 years old she is looking spinsterhood in the eye. When the new doctor comes to town, Grace causes an accident that makes them dislike each other immensely. It takes a kidnapping by a gang of train robbers (love those outlaws!) to make them see each other in a new light. I loved this book and already know that I will be re-reading it some time in the future.For those interested: There are no sexual situations or any language problems to offend any readers.
In trying to rescue a kitten Grace falls from a tree and knocks Dr.Gaitlin O'Mally from his horse. In the fall Grace breaks her leg. When she goes into the office for a follow-up visit both Grace and Gaitlin are kidnapped by a band of outlaws. These outlaws have a code of honor that they will not harm a married lady and they need the Dr's help for one of their men. The kidnappers take Grace and Gaitlin to a cabin many miles from where they live and leave them there. Due to the weather they are stranded and must learn to get along. They finally are able to leave and make the trek back to their homes. Its a fun read. Due to the strict morals of the day some of the events they endure while kidnapped do not rest easy with Grace. Their situations add to the fun of the story.
This is the last book of the series,actually sorry to see it end.All books were nicely brought to a conclusion with Just Grace.The new Doctor in town has the unexpected pleasure of meeting Grace when she falls out of a tree knocking him off his horse into a pile of manure.She is not the angel that fell from heaven,more like got kicked out.The story has many twist and turns,by them first getting kidnapped,then having to survive three weeks in the snowy mountains,trip back down,hotels with real running water,indoor plumbing,extravagant sleeping car.It was the best experience of Graces life.It takes a lot for them to wake up and realize they were meant for each other.The age difference is only a number when the heart wants what the heart wants.
I have widely varied interest in types of reading matter, but can count on the gentility of Ms Brown's novels, when in the mood for something kind and positive. They are well written and uplifting - a pleasant contrast to the harsh reality of many books. Maggie's Mistake (#2) and Emma's Folly (#3) are related novels. I read these three out of order, not realizing they were related. They preferably should be read in order, though each was fine, individually. I enjoyed all three.
This is the fourth book in the series and is about four friend two of whom are sisters. This book is about the younger sister.. It takes place in the Texas Oklahoma Indian Territory. This book is a light-hearted story and is a fun read. I am sure if you read this series you will enjoy them as much as I did. I enjoy Carolyn Brown's books because they are fun reading and you hate to see them come to an end.
I am a big fan of Carolyn Brown, I have read several of her books and enjoyed them very much. I'm glad I didn't read this one first or I may have not read any of her others. It was rather far fetched, not something that you would even think could happen. I just didn't care for it and feel it may have been one of her early writings. The humor wasn't there either. If your a fan, you may want to skip this one.
This is a cute story and a very fast read. I loved the characters and the quirky situations they were in. If your looking for a fun, enjoyable read this is your book. Carolyn Brown knows how to tell an enjoyable story no matter what century.
I found this book interesting. It was predictable, as most of these stories are, but the plot and characters kept me reading. Plot development was done in such a way as to make this a captivating story. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes romance without being too mushy.

The book is short on theory as it is very practical book.Bottom line: If you want to shoot fashion or learn how to achieve "The Look" this book is a necessary start, and worth every penny.
As a professional photographer for over 30 years I find this book very interesting. The book reveals more about how the photographer was thinking about each photo and why more so than how they did it. I like that approach, other readers looking for more details may not. Gatcum tells me just enough about what was used to create the lighting allowing me to verify my own read on what was done and also answer the old how did they do that? Some of the shots are done simply and some have all sorts of lighting going on. The interesting part is getting a read on the why of each image as much as the how. I find myself just enjoying the book and it's images rather than feeling I am reading a textbook.
The variety of photos in this book was surprising. Although it doesn't always go into the deepest detail for the lighting set-up, the diagrams and resulting photos are enough to get you started, or at least to let you decide if that is a direction you want to consider.If you've ever attempted to replicate photos from a magazine and couldn't quite figure out the lighting differences between their photo and yours, this make let you in on the missing link.
I grabbed this book in hopes that it would fire up my creative juices by sharing some fashion inspired lighting ideas. I had hoped for insights in the how's and why's to give me some ideas that I may not have considered.In my opinion it falls a bit short of that mark. Yes there are a large number of sample images and descriptions of the lighting. Unfortunately the lighting descriptions in 99% of the circumstances don't mention anything about the lighting ratios, and what's almost worse than that is that there is little insight about what the photographers were after. Why they chose to light things the way they did. With these two drawbacks you're left with: a) recipe for a cake that tells you the ingredients, but not the quantities. b) A sample result with no insight as to why the lighting formula was chosen in the first place.Another thing about this book that may be of interest to another photographer is that I'd estimate that of the 50 examples, I'd bet that half of them are natural light. Yes, it's good to hear that natural light can be used effectively but what I had expected and hoped for was studio lighting templates.While the book makes no real claims about post processing tips there are a few mentions of using PS for specific effect. And since just about everyone is shooting in digital these days, information on processing those digital negatives can be pretty crucial. Unfortunately when post processing is mentioned there is almost no detail for someone needing direct guidance in that area.I don't think that I would recommend this book.
This book really helped me understand the entire concept of lighting! I've tried multiple setups featured in the book and it hasn't failed me yet! Awesome book to check out to up your photography skills.
This book does have some good concepts. There is a glossary of photography lighting concepts at the beginning that it fairly detailed. What I learned after reading this book was that this was just filler to make the book bigger and therefore justify the price.The concepts in this book are not outlined well enough to be taken seriously. For that, I would recommend you look at something more comprehensive by someone like Scott Kelby.

This book is priceless as it contains 11 chapters of invaluable information and resources needed to study or comprehend this obscure but important world religion. Since this book is by the world renowned Zoroastrianism expert Mary Boyce, this book is sure to be accurate and filled with indisputable and expert information. I recommend this for any Iranologist, Historian of Religion, Iranian Studies student, Or a very curious reader who wants to expand their knowledge. This book pairs well with other of Mary Boyce's works (like 'Zoroastrians: Their beliefs and practices' or 'Zoroastrianism: It's antiquity and constant vigour'). One of the definitive resources for the study of Zoroastrianism.
This book is a real gem as is the whole series. Series editor John Hinnels, himself an expert on Zoroastrianism he wrote Zorastrians in Britain, has done a good job of getting many experts to put together the most important sources on the world religions. In this one Mary Boyce, the authority on Zoroastrianism and Professor emeritus at the University of London gives us some basic sources. Anyone studying Zoroastrianism knows that new editions of the primary sources dont come out very often. This book contains only selections of the Avesta, Vendidad and other works unfortunately. However, it does contain many other sources including works from Herodutos, Strabo and my personal favorite a newspaper report of the new Atash Bahram in Bombay dated 1897. This is essential for anyone with an interest in the subject.
This is a great book if you want to learn how certian concept of Zoroastrian faith emerged on Judism, Christianity and Islam; such as, after life, how Auhra Mazda judges people, and good people will be able to pass a bridge and wrong doers will fall off the bridge. There was one point that Zoroastrian did not share with other faith which was fasting.Last, fire means justice, and Zoroastrian people do not worship fire, as a matter of fact they worship just one God, and call their God Ahura Mazda which means the Wise Lord.The book briefly discussed how Zoroastrian faith shaped ancient political system in Iran.It is a nice book to read and have fun.
This is very helpful presentation of representative texts designed for the student interested in gathering basic research information about the religion. The information is not presented in an especially interesting way; Boyce's prose introduction to each piece, and the translations themselves, are straightforward but not florid. The project might be improved by a more approachable and energetic translator, though it seems clear that this presentation offers a precision of terms and clarity not easily matched.
If you are interested in the pure message of Zoroaster, this and many other interpretations of the religion are misleading.They deal generally with the traditional aspect of the religion as we know it today, which is really a mixture of many religious philosophies and practices which appeared before and after Zoroaster, such as Mithraism, Maniism, Mazdakism, Christianity which itself has derived many of it's traditions and concepts like Christmas, "son of god", Easter, etc. from Mithraism and other Iranian religions.We can conclude that Zoroastrianism in Iran stayed true to Zoroaster's message only through the Achaemenid dynasty, ended by Alexander's invasion of Iran around 300 BC. One major contributor was Alexander's destruction of the royal library at Persepolis which contained the only written text on Zoroastrianism.After 70 years of Macedonian rule, the Parthians (Iranian dynasty) started recollecting as much as they could to go back to their Zoroastrian roots, but they were not able to separate the true Zoroastrianism from other competing religions of the time.The truth about Zoroaster's briliant and thought provoking message lies in the 17 simple chapters of Gatha, which is the only direct work of Zoroaster, in existence. His message was about human individuality, equality, truth, unification with the natural order, morality and, in fact, anti organized religion, which he viewed as root of greed and wrong doing in the world around him.So after reading this and other books about Zoroaster and Zoroastrianism, please pick up the Gatha of Zoroaster and read it. It is available in many languages on-line, for free. And for further understanding, refer to a book called "Zarathustra" by Jalaledin Ashtiani.

Gives a concise history of maps, along with the origins and evolution of their accompanying monsters. Makes you wonder; where people just bad at accurately drawing animals before the 1700s, or did the explorers just not even try. A written description of an octopus ends up looking like a lobster on the map. I guess eight legs meant lobster to the artist, because it was all he knew. A simple sketch from someone who had seen an octopus (or for that matter, a dead one preserved in brine) would have allowed the artist to get a lot closer to reality. Most inaccuracies are easily attributable to misunderstandings. Obviously sea-dogs were seals or sea lions, but something was lost in translation and the artist ended up drawing something closer to a dog than a seal. A quick read, because of all the pictures, which are great. My only gripe would be that many of the pictures didn't go with the text on the same page, so there was some flipping back and forth required to follow along. I realize though that it must be difficult to edit things to fit the text near the appropriate pictures, so I didn't take away a star.
I like the paper quality and size of this book, but was disappointed with the rest. The illustrations are nowhere near one would expect from such a wonderful theme. I am going to print some images I find through a Google search, because this book left me totally uninspired. Do not be mislead from the cover picture - that is probably the prettiest ( and least cropped ) map you will see.
This wasn't quite what i was expecting, but I'm not at all disappointed. I was expecting something akin to a bestiary or a catalog of all the sea monsters, maybe with a bit of history or a description of the monster. Instead, the Author goes into depth as to why the monsters were put on the maps at all, sometimes for religious reasons, sometimes for decoration, and sometimes the monsters were just cases of mistaken identity. While it didn't list every single monster ever drawn, it did have a few sections like i had described above. All in all it's an excellent book, and became one of my favourites pretty quickly.
What an awesome book! I'm an amateur cartographer and had never really thought about the sea monsters and other items included in the periphery of medieval maps. This book provides a very interesting discussion of these little extras, plus it has wonderful photos of maps. Normally I purchase Kindle books but this is definitely worth having in hard copy.
I was hoping this book was a collection of images of Sea Monsters from antique maps. But there are barely any pictures and illustrations of the creatures. I was really disappointed and ended up putting this book in the pile to give to Half Price Books.
Chet Van Duzer always delivers excellent research and this book is no exception. This is a topic that fascinates many readers both inside the cartographic community and the generalist. Very well illustrated.
